Would a captain really have a plate with just two pieces of plain hardtack on the table? You can't eat that as is, it has to be smashed up with a hammer or boiled in a stew.
People overstate how hard hardtack is. You can dip it into your soup and it’ll be soft.
>>220314952It's there as an option, you can see he didn't start them. The unrealistic part is having two entire live weevils on the plate, the whole point of hardtack is to avoid this kind of thing
>>220315165Ok Mr. Perfect Teeth
>>220315238Why would bugs avoid them? They're good eating. I think they're just good for long shelf life.
>>220314952YOU can't eat them because you're a pathetic excuse for a man. A real sailor can do it and does so on the daily
Historically they were dipped in warm salt water and some tea to soften them up.
>>220315658With scurvy, even.
>>220315714>dipped in warm salt waterWhat bo ketchup?>>220315735Nah they invented vitamin c by then
>>220314952They were sides. And obviously nobody ate them. It looks like someone took a bite and then changed their mind.
>>220315818>take a bite of hard tack>put it back on the plate and then place another piece on top so it doesn't look as suspicious
>>220315904attention to detail in this movie is amazing.
>>220316018Probably the work of that tricky Irishman
>>220315238Hardtack was literally famous for becoming infested with weevils. They would chew tunnels through it. It wouldn’t make you sick or the change the taste however so sailors would just eat the hard tack in the dark.

>>220317327>>220317349I love these goofballs
>>220314952They were just there as a set up for his lesser of two weevils joke. I bet him and the bosun were cracking themselves up for hours planning that one for dinner.
>>220317636kekThe coxswain probably set the weevils loose when the doctor wasn't looking
>>220317636Those devious hooligans up to no good. Those whom would plan such a pun would pick a pocket!
>>220314952I have a whole piece of hardtack that my 3xgreat grandfather kept after the civil war. Don't know what to do with it besides keep it in the cookie tin it's lived in for the last century. Is it common to find surviving pieces? I've heard some people say it turns to dust and others say it turns to brick and lasts forever.
>>220316153Hardtack kept dry is highly resistant against bugs, but keeping large amounts of anything dry was nearly impossible with age of sail technology.
>>220318225If you eat it on livestream I will personally pay you $5,000 USD. Any matchers?
>>220314952>HARD TACK OHS>Smash 'em with a hammer or boil 'em in a stew
>>220315284Brush your teeth, nigel.
>>220318529Can I outsource the eating to an Indian? I'd like to keep my teeth intact.
>>220318993Sure, but the Indian will get the $5,000
