He's simply changing minor details about how a person -- who is already an unreliable narrator -- would remember such events to make them grander than they already were. We know Odysseus is the only person able to corroborate is own story he tells the Phaecians, he could come up with whatever the hell he wanted (and likely did) for them. And Nolan is just doing that very same thing again.
