Who was in the wrong here?
>>
Top dude putting his boys in a foder situation.
>>
Bottom guy. Should’ve just pushed harder. Pop some smoke grenades or something dumb boomer.
>>
Neither. They should have listened, and that's what no one else did.
>>
The running up the hill into machine guns strategy didn't really seem to be working
>>
>>220321967
Pretty sure both listened to their superiors. What they should've done is said, "fuck it" like the dude who played Jesus did.
>>
>>220321793
I don't know, we thought it'd be cool like Saving Private Ryan but didn't get past the opening with the dead guys.

Nick Nolte is a massive prick in this movie
>>

No I mean why go around it? What do you think they were doing?
>>
>>220322450
They did, and you would know that if you had actually watched the fucking movie instead of stinking up this thread
>>
Staros just wanted to hang out in his cuck cave praying to Jesus and cry about leading his men
>>
>>220322659
>No I mean why go around it?
Bcuz they'd be less likely to get shot.

>what do you think they were doing?
Getting shot.

>>220322667
>they did
Well, they should have done it.
>>
>>220321793
Iirc the captain was in the wrong for valuing his men above the mission. .
>>
>>220321793
this might be my favorite scene in any movie. i'll never forget seeing it for the first time. just incredible
>>
>>220321793
The gay nigger whispering over the whole movie.
>>
Staros was wrong for being weak and indecisive. John Cusack's char comes in and takes over and easily wins the battle. But Nolte is in the wrong for being motivated by resentment and the feeling of having wasted his life, leading to him caring only about him and his glory, which makes him a bad leader.
>>
why did they even need that hill on a deserted island?

just let the japs starve to death and move on to a real objective
>>
>>220323257
Because the isle had an airfield. They fought over tiny islands where you couldn't really fortify or bunker down, so being able to send planes somewhere was good enough to essentially take over large sectors.
>>
>>220323257
That's the whole Pacific War, few islands had a strategic value but the big bosses really wanted a clean map.
>>

They did, in fact both did the top one (I don't remember names) did in fact listen to him in that situation under the assumption that it must be really bad if he is being insubordinate but the bottom guy had been hesitant and unclear with his superior until then making it seem like he was being a wuss. If he gave clear assertions about the situation then his commander would have better understand the situation but instead he just said 'its bad' and 'people are dying' like no shit of course its bad and people are dying.

I have to say I think the film is incredibly well written where even though the commander seems like an absolute jackass, he actually, given the information he has doesn't really do anything wrong and the bottom soldier does the right thing all the way through but its unclear if what he did was actually for the best of the mission, blurring the line of what is moral in war, the objective or saving your own men?

Nick Nolte has only like 20 minutes of screentime and his character just disappears midway through but it's sucg a great performance and character. He sacrificed everything in his life for a middling career in the military, passed over for promotions, no medals, nothing to show for. His son isn't in the military so he's got no legacy, he got nothing. The war is finally here and he's done nothing until this moment, the only chance he'll ever have to to something, prove himself. And when he's finished and they've won he's totally empty, he's gained nothing from victory.

I really wish Malick would release alternative versions of all his movies. Especially those of the Weightless trilogy. I want a 9 hour cut of Song to Song. Guess he's too old, now. It breaks my heart.
>>
>>220324208
Lol, the US actually ran out of thermite they dropped so much. Luckily they had invented the atom bomb to make up for the shortfall.
>>
>>220324208

>>
>>220324066

Guadalcanal wasn't deserted. The Japanese were actively trying to reinforce it. There were also a few major naval battles near the island. It had a strategic airfield that the Japs wanted to hang onto, to disrupt lines of supply/communication between the US and Australia. It was also the first major stepping stone towards Japan.

As to the OP, in the movie Noltes character is objectively wrong for pushing Staros so hard during the actual attack, he's doing it for careerist reasons and literally needs a medal of honour action from john cusack to win it and doesnt win it on the first day anyway. Hes not wrong for firing staros later though but that doesn't accuse the dumb push at the start he keeps telling staros to do

I just remember it being a little pretentious.

Farewell to the King is the superior Nick Nolte WW2 movie.
>>
>>220326393
Staros wanted to manuever, ironically it was nolte who has them just sit there until the next day
>>
>>220321793
why didn't they just surrender? Surely getting tortured for 4 years in a POW camp is better than dying so lockheed martin can sell some bombs.
>>
>>220322033
would he make a deal with God and get Him to swap their places?
>>
Wtf I hate Eowyn now
>>
>>220326937
Staros stopped his attack and lost control of the initiative because he was concerned about his men's lives. Ironically, if he would have pressed the attack and overwhelmed the bunkers before the Japs could re-organize they would have lost less men.
>>
>>220321793
Why didn't the Japanese just surrender? Surely being treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention in a POW camp is better than dying just so Mitsubishi can sell more bombs?
>>
>>220327008
You have no basis for this belief at all, all efforts to overcome the bunker on day one failed. The japanese also reduced their commitment apparebtly shortly after the phone call scene with noltes orders therefore making no difference. You're absolutely 100% totally wrong.
