Staros was wrong for being weak and indecisive. John Cusack's char comes in and takes over and easily wins the battle. But Nolte is in the wrong for being motivated by resentment and the feeling of having wasted his life, leading to him caring only about him and his glory, which makes him a bad leader.

If he gave clear assertions about the situation then his commander would have better understand the situation but instead he just said 'its bad' and 'people are dying' like no shit of course its bad and people are dying.I have to say I think the film is incredibly well written where even though the commander seems like an absolute jackass, he actually, given the information he has doesn't really do anything wrong and the bottom soldier does the right thing all the way through but its unclear if what he did was actually for the best of the mission, blurring the line of what is moral in war, the objective or saving your own men?

Nick Nolte has only like 20 minutes of screentime and his character just disappears midway through but it's sucg a great performance and character. He sacrificed everything in his life for a middling career in the military, passed over for promotions, no medals, nothing to show for. His son isn't in the military so he's got no legacy, he got nothing. The war is finally here and he's done nothing until this moment, the only chance he'll ever have to to something, prove himself. And when he's finished and they've won he's totally empty, he's gained nothing from victory.
