So did people just cum their pants when they saw that last 20 minutes in theaters back in fucking 1928Is there any reason Buster Keaton isn't considered just straight up one of the greatest directors of all time in any era
>>220339190Just rewatched this. Great movie.Buster did not own his films and they were not screened much until his reappraisal in the 1960s. Chaplin owned his films and spent his entire life bankrolling screenings of his movies to cement his legacy. It really is that simple. People online have this high-minded idea that the cream rises to the top, but really it comes down to rights holders and money.

If you're saying genius is often not recognized within its lifetime, fine, but Buster DID get reappraised and is about as highly regarded as a comedian can get.
>>220340266because peter bogdonavitch and the cahiers shilled super hard for him in the 60s and got Cannes to give him an honorary award right before he died, setting in motion the modern discourse on his films.
>>22033977970s campus revival + pundits brought him back. His style and persona are closer to the taste of growing cynicism of post Vietnam
