In Greek mythology, the Laestrygonians were a tribe of man-eating giants. They were said to have sprung from Laestrygon, son of Poseidon. Odysseus, the main character of Homer's Odyssey, visited them during his journey back home to Ithaca. The giants ate many of Odysseus's men and destroyed eleven of his twelve ships by launching rocks from high cliffs. Odysseus's ship was not destroyed because it was hidden in a cove near shore.

The force that attacked Odysseus is described as a mixture of giant and very large men, so they must be small giants. Achilles' armor was forged by Hephaestion and is supposedly being worn by Agamemnon in the trailer - maybe that's why it looks like Power Rangers armor or was made by aliens. A tribe of giants who are the offspring of Poseidon's demigod son could also be wearing similar kind of armor.
>>
>>220343538

and yet they still chose to wear their breastplates, helmets and bracers that are inexplicably ubiquitous in all trash ancient/medieval settings? odd for people not expecting any trouble.
>>
>>220343479
Because it's a stylistic anachronism and not a narrative one. It's merely conveying some grand mysticism around this crazy tribe of giant maneaters that destroy Odysseus' men.

You have to remember, Odysseus is recounting his journey to a group of people. These scenes are actually flashbacks, not live. And Odysseus is the only survivor. There is no one there to fact check or corroborate. So of course, Odysseus, the man of twists and turns and cunning, embellishes his story a bit. Instead of being beaten back by men in cloth, they were giants with huge armor that his men had no hope against, and this is again embellished by Nolan who made their armor even more impenetrable.

It's all good fun, mate.

The main problem is that the costumes all look really, really shit. I can overlook historical inaccuracies and not being faithful to the source material because it's a film, you need to compromise. Poetic license and epic written mythos don't translate into reality without looking ridiculous. Samson killing a thousand men with a donkey's jaw or Hercules wrestling a lion or Greeks fighting Titans might sound cool on paper or look good in still images, but trying to give such scenes movement invariably exposes how fake, gay, and stupid such shit would actually look in real life. It's not helped by directors like Nolan making the whole thing stereotypical weightless capeshit with extras on wires flying off through trees instead of how it would actually look if someone were hit by something akin to a forklift.

Formations served myriad purpose. Not only did it offer protection, since even the bravest man would hesitate to charge at a body of 20+ aware men, but it also made communication possible and exerted authority over the men: it was true that, up until ww1, soldiers who were allowed to go off and galavant at their leisure tended to become unruly at best and deserters at worst.

Landing on strange shores and advancing inland in a disorganized mob would simply be asking for trouble and a collapse of the army. Even if soldiers who didn't have grudges from the long campaign didn't seize the opportunity such disorganization would present to settle them, or leave, what happens when hostile forces notice and begin to pick them off? What happens if a couple of the men happen upon a Shepard's girl and decide to run a train on her turning the locals against you in the process? What happens if a handful of men find some pig and decide to slaughter it for themselves and then they're found out by their peers creating resentment and mistrust? What happens if the locals approach with a deal the men can't refuse, saying betray your general and give us information or die to our superior numbers? What happens if an enemy appeared at the rear and the force had to retreat or be cut off, how would the commander let his men know to fall back? He would have to abandon the stragglers, wasting manpower.

Essentially there was zero chance the army would advance inland in such a sloppy rabble. There's simply too much that could go wrong, too much to lose.

Of course such considerations of writing is solely the province of the intelligent who have actual knowledge and interest in the martial arts. Nolan is an idiotic midwit who makes movies for brown people and brainlets.

Watch anime. Or amy warhammer cgi animation. Or any jeet movie where there's a regular sized human battling something even just 12-14 feet tall. It will always look ridiculous because men duelling such extraordinary monsters defies belief in anyone besides people who are wholly ignorant of strength and physics. There is simply no way a man - even one with the strength of ten men, is going to successfully fight off a creature 2x his size or larger in a melee duel. Imagine a midget successfully fending off Brock Lesnar or Eddie Hall. It wouldn't matter how athletic they were, or even if they had the same strength as Lesnar or Hall, simple physics dictates the thing that has hundreds of pounds and several feet will win in a one on one fight.

The best portrayals of myth are in the old adventure movies like Sinbad or Jason and the Argonauts, where when they met monsters technological limitations stopped the directors from being able to insert fluid fight scenes so the protagonists are always running away from the cyclops or titan or harpies and fighting in groups chucking javelins or firing arrows, because that is realistically the only way humans would hope to stand a chance. Even Hercules knows better than to try and start a capeshit battle with the titan in J&tA.

>Braveheart: I AM William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight? Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!

>13th Warrior: Lo, There do I see my Father Lo, There do I see my Mother and My Brothers and my Sisters Lo, There do I see the line of my people back to the begining Lo, They do call to me They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla Where thine enemies have been vanquished Where the brave shall live... Forever

>Alexander: The greatest honor a man can ever achieve... is to live with great courage and to die with his countrymen... in battle for his home. I say to you... what every warrior has known since the beginning of time. Conquer your fear... and I promise you, you will conquer death. And someday I vow to you... your sons and your grandsons will look into your eyes. And when they ask why you fought so bravely at Gaugamela... You will answer, with all the strength of your great great hearts: I was here this day at Gaugamela for freedom.... and GLOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYY..... of Greece!! ZEUS BE WITH US

Nolan is autistic and clearly someone dared him to make more woke movies, so he came up with Tenet (black lead) and this.
Bear in mind that in his entire career he never had any prominent black roles or anything related to that. Maybe that Spawn guy in TDK in a bit role, that's it.
So they basically dared him into a career suicide like this.

BRAVO NOLAN
>>
>>220356712
The earliest "armies" were literally crowds of men all fighting as individuals under one "banner", brawling. Formations don't exist in brawls. Battles wouldn't be fought between more than a few hundred people at a time to begin with. There would be no group capable of fielding armies big enough to require formations.

You're thinking too Greek when much of history was not so civilized.

>Nolan is an idiotic midwit who makes movies for brown people and brainlets.
Nolan is much smarter than you mate. You're just a retard who overrates his intelligence because you've watched a few history youtube videos. And while you talked about importance formation(to flex your paltry knowledge of history) you didn't give any evidence that Mycenean Greeks were that organized. Early armies were just rabble fighting under a banner. Even in latter times when they were more organized battles used to devolve into more of a scramble when fatigue set in. This anon >>220356845 is right.
>>
>>220343379
Oh the irony. Literally look at this shit
>>
>>220356845
I think it's just a case of that you're using "army" very loosely. Most people's definition of an army requires some sort of multi layered top-down organisation, which excludes tribal warfare. But when the first states did emerge, there were organised armies from the very beginning

>>220357014
The phalanx on the stela that the guy posted literally predate the Myceneans by almost 2000 years lol. Early armies absolutely were organised. Even the pre-dynastic kings in Sumer and Egypt managed the logistics of conducting raids hundreds of kilometres deep into enemy territories
>>
>>220357066
>Early armies absolutely were organised
Re-read my comments again. I am talking about not being organized when not in battle. In the trailer, we see multiple instances of organized battles. The only time we see they're not in formation is in the forest, swords sheared and not expecting any battle.

absolute LOOOL. Nolan threads attract the biggest idiots. Nolan is not a good artist or storyteller. His films are pale imitations of real artists like Michael Mann and perhaps Kubrick. He is literally a capeshitter. He makes films that Marvel enjoyers think are smart when they are bored of capeslop. Holy looool.

A real director like Mann or Kubrick would pay close attention to military history details and insert them, AND do a much better job of making the work artistic with good structure. Some of you redditors are hilarious.
