No idea, but I enjoyed it. The cast was good and I especially enjoyed the sequence where they showed the cross section of the ship in operation.

>>220347973It must be tough for zoomers, surrounded by post-modernist stuff referencing things they've never heard of. But equally they refuse to accept some things aren't for them. I guess if you didn't grow up with cutaway pictures of the RV Calypso it didn't make much sense huh.
>>220347973It’s not Moby Dick, it’s The Sun Also Rises. People think Steve Zissou is Jacques Cousteau but he’s not- Jacques is. Zissou is Ernest Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises focused on a cast of men who were veterans of WWI and had become emasculated because of it. Before the Great War, wars were determined by the efforts of men; what happened to change war was industrialization. WWI was fought with machine guns and mustard gas and tanks. Men didn’t face each other in battalion lines, they hid in trenches and often died from disease, an enemy they couldn’t even see. Jake Barnes’ love interest is Lady Ashley and while it’s an afterthought today, at the time “Ashley” was a man’s name. When you watch The Life Aquatic through this lens, it becomes clear how masculinity and emasculation are major themes: Zissou is sterile and can’t sire an heir, his rival played by Jeff Goldblum is a flamboyant closeted gay man, his crew is made up of fellow broken men desperate to prove their own worth, his ex wife fills the Lady Ashley role being more self actualized and bankrolling his adventures. The jaguar shark isn’t Ahab’s white whale, it’s the matador’s bull. Sometimes it kills you and sometimes you kill it but neither outcome is proof of your worth as a man, because it’s just an animal.
