any japanese movie recommendations?
>>
You can watch the rest of Kobayashi's movies. It's hard to recommend movies that are like his because basically everyone influenced by him in the 60's were communists that bastardized his formula with ideology.

964 pinnochio

I mean... Kurosawa... obviously
I would start with Rashomon and then watch whatever the hell you like after in whatever order (although watching Yojimbo before Sanjuro is a superior experience)... I personally started with Seven Samurai, but I would recommend this way instead
>>
>>220350664
Ignore this dick head. Those are awful, 964 pinnochio is one of the worst movies ever made, and i'm not even being hyperbolic.
>>
>>220350664
none of these are remotely similar to OPs movie
>>
>>220350197
Saw this as a teenager, at the time I didn't like black and white movies or foreign films. Harakiri was so good I just had to sit there and eat it. Blew me away.
>>
seven samurai is awesome
saw it for the first time this week and I was blow away
>>
>>220350839
OP here, same i don't watch black and white movies or foreign films that much, and i don't particularly like them, but Harakiri just kept me hooked all the time and also it looks great visually
>>
>>220351012
>seven samurai is awesome
Seven Samurai is overrated. It's my least favorite Kurosawa flick.
Watch The Bad Sleep Well.

Anything by Shinya Tsukamoto
>>
Ran is a masterpiece

Yojimbo is also really good. Anything Kurasawa and Mifune is great

Sword of Doom is an awesome one. A guy who goes by his own code.

Visitor Q? I didn't like that movie when I watched it in my teens. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll give it a rewatch.

seven samurai
red beard
lady snowblood
sonatine

you're a moron and a philistine.
>>
I thought High and Low was kind of overrated. The first half is extremely interesting. The second half is a well-made but comparatively much less police procedural. The last five (?) minutes are fantastic though.

Great film but I'm surprised people call it Kurosawa's best or one of the best films ever made.
>>
>>220351589
>sonatine
>lady snowblood
the only good japanese movies in the modern era.
>>
survive style 5+
>>
>>220351372
not even top 5 Ozu
>>
People usually recommend Kurosawa's Edo Period movies, but I think his best are his modern movies (High and Low, Ikiru, Red Beard). High and Low would be my first choice. Masterclass in composition and making the most out of small spaces
>>
>>220350197
samurai rebellion, it has the same director too
>>
>>220350197
Tatsuya Nakadai was the original choice to play Mr Miyagi in Karate Kid, but at the last minute (((producers))) dropped him for for Pat Morita. They worried Nakadai would make the tone of the film too serious. Retards.

Black Cat (1968) is good. Generally go for stuff like that or Seven Samurai if you’re just getting in because they’re action movies and easy to follow.
>>
>>220353302
Seven Samurai is literally almost 5 hours long. They're not 'action movies and easy to follow', retarded reddit zoomer.
>>
>>220353337
Compared to more experimental popular movies like “Face of Another” or anime movies like “Belladonna of Sadness” I’d consider something like Black Cat or 7 samurai entry level.

check out the movies of Juzo Itami, he was murdered by the yakuza
>In 2008, a former member of the Goto-gumi yakuza group told reporter Jake Adelstein: "We set it up to stage his murder as a suicide. We dragged him up to the rooftop and put a gun in his face. We gave him a choice: jump and you might live or stay and we'll blow your face off. He jumped. He didn't live."[21][22] The attack is thought to have been due to the topic of Itami's next film, which was rumored to have been focusing on connections between the Goto-gumi and the cult-like Soka Gakkai religious group.

Tampopo and Minbo are both amazing. The latter is what got him killed for its negative depiction of the yakuza.
