Is stop motion kino a dead genre?
>>
>>220356641
Aint nobody got time for that
>>
yeah most recent thing i like is a radiohead video clearly based on the wicker man from 10 years ago.

>>
>>220356641
It looks like shit despite requiring 50 times the effort it would take to just CG it.
>>
>>220356641
when done well it looks more realistic than cgi for certain things, but I’m sure it’s going to remain rare in mainstream shows and movies
>>
Watch Mad God

Stop motion looks better than CGI literally 99% of the time.
>>
It's more alive then non-Japanese 2D animation.
>>
>>220357051
yet CGI nowadays looks like shit and costs 100'000x more money

It's an interesting phenomenon, how a technique like this can be unbelievably good when it's got the funding and the institutional knowledge and the best writers, directors, and actors all want to work with it, but then when the next technique appears (other kinds of practical effects and then computer generated imagery) it falls apart very quickly.

Makes me worried for CGI when AI slop breaks through.
>>
>>220357051
>It looks like shit
Unlike modern CGI?
>>
>>220356641
there's a new Laika film on the way, OP. it's not a dead genre, but it's pretty much a niche medium
>>
>>220360970
it still looks worse than modern cgi and that's saying something
>>
>>220361339
Also Mexico's been getting into it now.
>>
>>220362039
>no clipping errors
>correct shadows and light sources
>same framerate as the surrounding scene
Modern CGI has none of these.
>>
>>220356641
CGI replaced it and then AI replaced CGI.

Mandalorian and Grogu has some Phil Tippet stop motion droids. There was giant crab monster in Skeleton Crew, and a walking crane thing in Mando s2.
>>
>>220356641
Pretty much. Only Phil Tippet does some stuff like this aside from the odd indie filmmaker or art grad.
Even Tippet himself is kind of pissed that he learned a skill for most of his life that he'd hardly get to use due to CGI.

Wes Anderson did some.

The crab looked phenomenal.

You're much better off with a puppet. I like the artistry of stop motion but it's always very apparent, whereas good masks or puppets have all the advantages of being on the set at the same time as the actors but still looking totally natural
>>
>>220357051
I am honestly, truthfully, 100% earnest in telling you that I would rather see stop motion of that quality over pretty much any CG any day. Even if it's not convincing, it's a real, three-dimensional object so it's less distracting to me, and worst case scenario I spend a few seconds admiring that someone built something with their hands and then get over it, instead of scoffing.
>>
>>220363426
>Mandalorian and Grogu has some Phil Tippet stop motion droids
cool
still not likely to see it but that is nice, i guess
>>
>>220363607
Yeah, it's like the Terminator exoskeleton from the first movie. You can tell it's fake but at the same time it has presence and "weight" to it as if it's real.
RoboCain from Robocop 2 also comes to mind. That thing was real when I watched it.
>>
>>220363659
endoskeleton*
whatever
>>
>>220356641
Nah there's still those Wallace and Grommit movies.
>>
>>220363705
>still
are they actually still making them? And if so is it real stop motion or do they just use CGI to fake it like South Park?

It such a time consuming way to animate, I dont think broccoli heads have patience for it.

Guys like Phil Tippet have a gift for having the patience to do it, learned in a time when there was no CGI option.

Lucas put a lot of dumb CG shit in the Original Trilogy Special Editions, the fucking Greedo shot being the most horrible. I was just thankful he did not have CG Imperial Walkers in the battle of Hoth and kept the original scenes.

Wasn't there a newish movie with Stop motion Yeti?
>>
>>220364580
That was in development hell since the 1980s
>>
>>220363543
It helps if there is little to no compositing. Everyone mistakes the bad shots from Alien 3 for stop motion or cgi.
>>
Are there any examples of good cgi in fantasy? The only one that impressed me was the Balrog from The Lord of the Rings.
>>
>>220364751
It wasn't?

Argument in favor of laziness is one of the worst good goy traits.

Came out in 2019 and it's excellent.

recently youtube's automatic system went after a bunch of channels who does stop motion short films and got demonetized for being "ai". it was niche before, and now corpos are actively trying to kill it.

Stephen Norrington has been working on something for a long time, though no one really knows if its stop motion or what.
