The quality of the writing suffered terribly, relying on being WHOA SO ZANY instead of clever. All the characters got tremendously flanderized and became insufferable. Ted got it the worst. He was a fairly likable guy at the start and then… jeez. He becomes this whiny, pathetic, sappy weirdo.
I don’t know if they got a new crop of writers who had no idea what they were doing or if the existing ones just gave up, but if you reach the point where Robin suddenly starts shouting “Patrice!!” because she hates some fat Asian chick, you know you’ve gone too far.
And then the whole wedding season that is both insufferable and pointless, because the wedding gets undone 15 seconds into the finale.
They should've had at least one season devoted to dating the mother, and scrapped the terrible ending that no longer fit.

Nothing really. The ending was fine and I still have never seen a good argument for why it was bad.
Robin was the main love interest throughout the show but she obviously couldn't be the mother since she was introduced in episode one (and had to be in order to be the main love interest). Killing the mother was the cleanest way to enable the setup of Ted telling his kids an overly long story about meeting their mom while still having Ted and Robin the Ross and Rachel of the show.
