It's good but it's certainly not space kino. It's like Mickey17 but made by another B studio.
The ship borrows way too much from Interstellar's tesseract, even down to the wires vibrating as you touch them. It was kinda lame just for not doing something different

If reading academic works gives you the same immediate reaction to an issue as seeing it packaged in a narrative, you might actually be clinically autistic. Have you had that checked?

>>
It was neat but that's about it. Worth a watch.
I liked the first "half" more than than the latter where it turned into a typical risky space maneuver scene.
>>
>>220404739
The dialogue in the movie is the epitome of modern writing. Nobody seems like a real person and there are constant attempts at "so that just happened" type humor in almost every fucking scene. Don't get me started on how fast and accurately he translates the rock alien's language, and how the alien just fully comprehends what Gosling means when he makes a sound. From one scene they go from communicating with gestures while figuring each other out, to Gosling having a computer translate the language so perfectly that they can have full fledged conversations with each other despite them having almost no context for anything the other is saying. Why make it such a point that there is a communication barrier if they're just going to ass-pull google translate 10 minutes later?
>>
>>220415056
The mission was to see what was happening in tau ceti and be able to figure it out, who better than the guy who made all astrophage discoveries so far? they couldn't just train a phd shitter and hope he has to vision and brains for it. Goose is the equivalent of einstein in-universe since he made the most important discoveries in the history of biology.
>>
>>220412443
he was only unqualified in the astronaut side of things, he was the foremost scientist in the field of astrophage and was the one who got the astronauts up to speed on what they'd need to know to do any of the potential tests.
Its just you know, they all fucking exploded and training new ones would take too long, so just send the non-astronaut and leave the astronaut tasks to the other two.
>>

>>
>>220416241

>>
>>220416199
to be fair, rocky has perfect memory, he actually figures out english a good bit before grace starts working out eridian
>>
>>220416199
they toned it down desu. The book is unbearable. I'm getting through it because I want to see how Rocky is portrayed but when it isn't redditisms, it's Grace pausing a conversation to obnoxiously explain factoids. Not as an internal monologue mind you, he really starts flexing his knowledge via a mid conversation lecture.

Weir justified the language thing with Eridians having a perfect memory, so Grace only had to say a word once for Rocky to know what it means, eh it's a bullshit but fine excuse. I guess he was too busy calculating fuel expenses to research linguistics, stemtards think those things are beneath them.
>>
>>220416327
More people, more coma slurry, more space needed, more weight, more fuel needed, getting that fuel would take too long.
I don't think the movie goes over it but they realize that they can't actually infinitely double the astrophage as they originally planned, they end up covering the entire sahara desert in astrophage breeding solarpanels to get the fuel at the speed they need in the book
>>
>>220416313
It's insanely contrived because they go out of their way to show how hard communication is between them before they jump right into them having full blown conversations with each other. Gosling sits down, says a word, and somehow the alien not only understands that it's a word, but already knows what it means since he replies with the equivalent sound. How the fuck did the alien even understand what the word meant in the first place
>>
>>220416430
because he showed him a clock, made it clear he understood by bringing his own clock, then grace points to a number multiple times while repeating 1 noise, its obvious the noise hes making is the noise that means that number, and rocky reciprocates
>>
>>220416430
Because goose is a genius and the alien is a literal engineer

>>
>>220416462
>because he showed him a clock, made it clear he understood by bringing his own clock, then grace points to a number multiple times while repeating 1 noise,
How does he know the alien understands what it means? How does the alien know what 1 hour is? What a minute is? There could already be the simply misunderstanding in the alien thinking that earth has 12-hour long days, which isn't a problem in itself but shows how easily misunderstandings could occur. Grace sits on his ass, says a singular word, then records the sound the alien makes. How does Grace know that Rocky understands? How does Grace know that the sound Rocky made when Grace explained the clock, was actually Rocky's word for clock? How the fuck do two entirely different types of lifeforms manage to create a full translator, that allows them to hold conversations with each other, with the same level of understanding that two humans with different languages using google translate would have, based solely on individual sounds which neither of them could possibly explain to each other without extreme difficulty, a lot of context and while avoiding misunderstanding which would compound further misunderstandings Gosling says that he was a teacher, and then unprompted the alien asks why they'd send a school teacher into space. How did Grace explain what a school teacher is, and why would Rocky assume school teachers aren't also sent to space on Earth? How does Grace even know that Rocky's species shares the concept of schools or school teachers? I know the movie isn't about all that, but it feels really cheap to make such a big deal out of it and then solve it so simply. Also took out all the interesting aspects of them having to solve a problem together with limited understanding of each other. It's dumb, and my autism doesn't like it

that's not a problem. First communication happens between different humans with people pointing at things and saying their word for it. Eridians having perfect memory means they remember the meaning the first time they hear it. It would 10x the speed they learn languages.

The problem is Grace would have to go into deep explanations for things Eridians have no concept of, like a hug. They don't exchange body heat, they don't breathe, they don't produce love hormones since their brains are fiber optics. There's no way they hug or do any kind of physical intimacy. They'd have no concept of a hug other than something humans do for some unknown reason.

And the other way around. Rocky would say things Grace wouldn't understand, and not be able to explain with the rudimentary broken english translation. I don't care, it's a funny moment, it's Weir who started the game of being a major fact checking nerd.

Because we all live on the same planet and are the same species

Precisely my point. What other things does Rocky not have a concept of? How would Grace know if Rocky says "I don't know what that word means", when he just assumes whatever sound Rocky makes is the translated version of the word Grace said?
>and not be able to explain with the rudimentary broken english translation
From what I saw, it really was pretty clear what. No worse than a guy who is almost, but not quite, fluent in your own language
>it's a funny moment, it's Weir who started the game of being a major fact checking nerd.
Hey, I don't disagree. It's not what the movie is about, but the plot itself made it a point to showcase the difficulty of communication. Frankly it would've been more interesting if they had to figure out the problem with limited understanding (like Rocky does with this sculptures). As soon as his sounds were translated to straight up full, comprehensive sentences, the alien feel of Rocky completely disappeared
>>
>>220416889
I literally told you that I was sorry if it was explained in the second half. I thought you were just theorizing on your own. One could almost say we had a misunderstanding in communication. You also don't have to be a cunt just because you're posting on an anonymous basket weaving forum
>>
Did the movie account for time dilation effects? Tau ceti is 12 light years away. Going there and back again at relativistic speeds would have meant not enough time to save Earth and 25% of the population, no?

Also it was really aggravating how the fact that the astrophage was being consumed by a lifeform on the planet was some big epiphany. I deduced that the moment he arrived in the star system
>>
Bruh, I thought this flick was too sappy, shallow and reddit. Yet, I'm suprised at how many people here completely failed to understand a movie as simple and infantile as this. Of all the things you could nitpick about it, somehow people decided to chose the most retard ones, like "but why no three hour explanation on why they can communicate!?" or "but why didn't they send more people!?".
>>
>>220417005
NTA but the problem here isn't that the interaction between rocky and grace is poorly written, it's that your stupidity and lack of problem solving ability gets in the way of you figuring out even the most basic of solutions to the issues you bring out.

>Because we all live on the same planet and are the same species
The eridians are an upright, cooperative, technologically advanced, fully sentient beings made of solid matter and with complex social structures. That's already closer to humans than a good chunk of complex life on the planet is.
>How would Grace know if Rocky says "I don't know what that word means", when he just assumes whatever sound Rocky makes is the translated version of the word Grace said?
are you retarded? Rocky would say "I don't know what that means", which are words he knows how to use. We know this because it happens multiple times in the movie lmao
>How would Grace know if Rocky says "I don't know what that word means", when he just assumes whatever sound Rocky makes is the translated version of the word Grace said?
you mean the way the movies does for a solid fifteen to twenty minutes of grace slowly learning how to communicate with rocky?
>>220417140
I initially thought this because they don't make it super clear in the movie but iirc people did the math based on the book and it all checks out. The human and eridian ships travel to tau ceti at a high proportion of the speed of light so that the journey takes around thirty years in total.
>not enough time to save Earth and 25% of the population
they actually take it as a given that a good chunk of the human species is fucked no matter what, 25% is the low end estimate for how many will definitely die by the time grace's samples get back

Except Grace doesn't know anything about them at fucking all, aside from the few things he can glean based on his perception
>are you retarded? Rocky would say "I don't know what that means", which are words he knows how to use
Anon, you need to read my posts properly. The entire point is that Grace does not know the difference between Rocky repeating the word or saying "I don't know". If grace says "soft" and Rocky replies "I don't know what that means", then Grace would mistake that reply for the Eridian's word for "soft". Do you understand?
>you mean the way the movies does for a solid fifteen to twenty minutes of grace slowly learning how to communicate with rocky?
He whips the computer out, says a few words, and then in the next scene he has a complete translator that can accurately interpret entire sentences so that they can communicate like two humans. I liked their interactions before that, though.

>Because we all live on the same planet and are the same species
Fair. I guess I'm assuming intelligent creatures would have a universal faculty of language subject to certain rules. Just as they would have to have an understanding of basic logic and obey its rules. Unless his biology was different that they didn't have language at all e.g. telepathy/hivemind or a vastly different language e.g. no perception of time, Eridians would probably follow basic rules of communication like pointing to an object and offering a symbol in the form of gesture, sounds etc. This is the most basic possible communication. If anything it clues us in that Rocky has similar language because he initiates contact by mimicking, which again humans also do. My contention is Rocky easily understands nuanced concepts that he shouldn't.

>Precisely my point. What other things does Rocky not have a concept of? How would Grace know if Rocky says "I don't know what that word means", when he just assumes whatever sound Rocky makes is the translated version of the word Grace said?
That comes after you have some basic vocabulary. You're right the movie exaggerates but it could just have cut out the long days of figuring those things out. Keep in mind this happens in every first contact scenario. You don't learn the word "Knowledge", you learn numbers, body parts, tools.

>From what I saw, it really was pretty clear what
he was saying? he wouldn't be able to explain very complex meanings if he can't even conjugate verbs correctly. This could be due to a feature of Eridian language or a limitation of Grace's software.

>but the plot itself made it a point to showcase the difficulty of communication. The movie is about an alien version of grace not about language. I feel that way about Arrival it made linguistics its whole thing and barely did it. Btw this rock giggles and dances before they even give him a voice so who cares.

>Michael Harner, in his 1977 article The Enigma of Aztec Sacrifice, cites an estimate by Woodrow Borah, according to which about one percent of the population was sacrificed annually in the early 15th century. Borah calculated that about 250,000 persons were sacrificed every year, assuming a total population of the Aztec Empire of roughly 25 million.
Maybe I'm confused but I do not see the problem here. As soon as grace figures out what the eridian for "I do not understand" is, he will be able to understand when rocky says it and explain it to him, WHICH WE SEE HIM DO IN THE MOVIE.
>He whips the computer out, says a few words, and then in the next scene he has a complete translator that can accurately interpret entire sentences so that they can communicate like two humans. I liked their interactions before that, though.
yeah because it's a movie and they're not gonna spend two hours doing a detail by detail granular depiction of alien linguistics. They show you
>how grace initially establishes contact
>how he figures out basic communication and words
>how his ship AI enables him to instantly understand rocky
>how rocky being a talented engineer can quickly create an audio device for himself
boom there you go. the movie is entirely self-consistent and logical with regards to this. you are just a fucking cretin who's upset the alien speaks despite the fact that the alien speaking is the single best part of the movie and the core of how the movie got marketed

>establish that pointing at something and making a specific noise repeatedly is that thing's name, that's how you get the word for I/me/the self
>establish what an affirmative/negative is
>establishing what understanding or more bluntly "knowing" is is the hardest but can be done
>once you figure that out the issue becomes a non-issue because rocky can easily say "me no understand/know
they have all the time in the world on a spaceship, they can 100% figure it out.

>>220425728
in the book the old chick is made the empress of earth or some shit, it makes 0 fucking sense, you are just supposed to accept it, thank god the cut it out and make her just some cold important bureaucrat without going deeper into it
a loooot of the book is just her humiliating and flexing her power on everybody like its some weird humiliation fetish, do we need fucking chapter of her telling someone how important she is in every flashback?

>>220425825
thats still not enough
the book creates a problem for itself than it then tries to fix
when he could have been made one of the backups from the start getting rid of that entire bizarre subplot, instead the book decides 3 backup people, which i bet he got from older nasa missions, but they wont decide the future of earth and there are always dozens of trained astronauts anyway
>>
>>220415915
In the book it's not so much because of the schedule but because Graceling happened to have a rare genetic mutation that allowed him to survive long comas which they were specifically looking for in all their astronauts
>>
>>220425701
>sending an untrained guy into space is the worst idea
>putting them in a coma is even dumber, its kind of brushed over in the movie, but its literally 3 years worth of research and preparation they could have done
The book does address this, the film really should have done so too.
They couldn't leave people awake since the risk of them going crazy was too big. They would rather take the risk of putting them in a coma than letting them be awake for years.
Which brings up the other point. To be put in a coma you have to have a certain genetics. It doesn't work on everyone. The protagonist happens to have those genetics, which is partly why he was kept in the project - he was a spare from the get-go. He was an obvious choice to send, once the two candidates died, since he knew a ton about the astrophage. He wouldn't have to do anything regarding flying the spaceship or similar, he just needed to do science. Doesn't matter if he's not an expert at this other stuff since he's gonna have other people take care of it. That was the plan at least until he was the only survivor. So it isn't as dumb as it appears.
Now why the fuck didn't they bring any of this up in the movie? Who knows.
>>
>>220419599
>The whole movie is mystical nerd fag shit and military tech propaganda, moron. NASA propaganda et al is
You are not wrong but I like a good bit of propaganda that is aimed at me. It is nice when the regime puts out material trying to get me to buy into their bullshit. I won't but I can enjoy it al the same. Much the same way I love Star Trek despite it being propaganda.

thats retarded a fuck
they treat it like its a 4 year long isolation ward, but they have no way of knowing how many years could solving the problem take, they gain nothing outside of risk ... which the book actually proves on how stupid it is since 2 people of the 3 die in their sleep
unless you pick the biggest fucking mental nutcases nobody will go insane after few years with 2 other people around, we put criminals in prison for 40 sitting with same dude in one cell

>Now why the fuck didn't they bring any of this up in the movie? Who knows.

since its fucking retarded, the entire coma shit is negative iq
you are on the clock, and those 4 years translated to 13 on earth due to speed at which they were traveling, that fucking 13 years wasted
its just retarded
>>
>>220425877
Yes lets build a billion batteries instead. Brilliant idea. Leftists continue to be meatshields for the coal-burning industry.
>>

>They couldn't leave people awake since the risk of them going crazy was too big. They would rather take the risk of putting them in a coma than letting them be awake for years.
that's really retarded

a billion reactors is way more stupid
chuds will be like
>climate change isn’t real
>the competency crisis!!!
and then
>let’s build a billion nuclear reactors and staff and run it with indians!
>>
>>220405896
I hated the martian and liked this.
>>
>>220425660
you got examples? I'm a third of the way into the book and haven't seen this
>>
It's a very fun movie but Eridians would have been unable to breed astrophage without UV bombardment - something they have absolutely no concept of. They would also be unable to map stars or even detect Tau Ceti without radio telescopes. Andy Weir is a hack.
>>
>>220426344
Yes, let's let those indians and chinese burn coal which releases more radioactivity than nuclear. You're a fucking idiot. Strip mine the earth for batteries because your masters want to make more money.
>>
>>220404739
>Is it the kino of the year?
yep, it was almost perfect
>>
>>220405402
>leftoid retard hates himself
>demands all media also be self hating instead of inspirational

fuck you retard
>>
>>220426507
They have telescopes you midwit, also astrophage can be bred by just heat and co2.
>>
>>220414911
There are no reasonable discussions of new movies because this board is infested with baiting paid advertisers. Post-torrent threads actually get a bit of organic discussion.

For a creature with no concept of sight at all. To see fucking lightyears. You dumb motherfucker. You pleb. Post a picture of Tau Ceti from earth with a conventional telescope even. They use vibrations exclusively. Not known for travelling through fucking space well.

Personally I hate when fiction reflects reality. Any show that had a "COVID" season I refuse to watch any part of.
>>
>>220416199
the alternative is a 3 hour long run time
>>
>>220426707
you realize we know about things we can't perceive with sensory organs right anon?
>>
>>220426507
of all the stupid shit in the book those are actually explained
their use their own planet to create the fuel in their seas and they used some device to convert light into sound waves to see the stars
>>
>>220416199
The book spent more time on the language barrier but it would have bored people.
>>
>>220427322
no way, that shit is cool and people find it interesting
>>
>>220427517
I enjoyed that part too but I don't think people want to watch it for any longer than depicted.
>>
>>220404776
It's really gotten ridiculous
>>
>>220415502
Actually I'm part jew and I don't like spending money.
>>
I liked it. The design for the Eridian ship and all of Rocky's constructs were kino.
>>
>>220425408
it's doing that by breeding and physically blocking out and absorbing the sun's energy. astrophage is doing fuck all to earth's biosphere itself.
>>
>>220408821
Not as kino as Interstellar but still pretty good.
>>
>>220404739
>First 5 minutes is le heckin wacky future man.
We can't have any serious stories anymore can we?

Why can't you be serious?

yeah, the t-mobile chick
>>
>>220429981
yeah, they had the gene that should have made a long term coma survivable for them but they died despite that, either part of the coma process was messed up or the comarobot fucked up, or just pure bad luck

We don't have t-mobile in my country. Thanks anon.

they were in a coma for 4 years things can go wrong
plus the robot is probably set to prioritize grace over the others because he's the only essential part of the mission
>>
>>220420918
I teared up two times, and both were when it seemed like Rocky was dead. I'm so used to movies giving you an attachment to something and then destroying it, so I was 100% sure he was gonna die at some point. Grace ending the movie with being a teacher again for a bunch of small rocks was fucking cute.
>>
>>220425660
>>220426372
I read The Martian book and I don't remember any weird sexual stuff, so I feel that anon might be making shit up. The movie didn't seem to change much, other than dropping a stretch where he fucked up and broke the Pathfinder lander so he couldn't talk to NASA anymore
>>
if Reddit made a movie

Rocky just switches his life capsule by magic !

Surely it cannot be worse than Everything Everywhere. Right? I mean, that one literally was filled with toilet humour memes and dildos.

not even for free
lol
>>
>>220431083
What are you talking about?
>>
Andy Weir watched Sunshine and instead of a supersymmetrical Q-ball disrupting the sun, its a some interstellar microorganism called astrophage siphoning energy from the sun to propel itself to a nearby carbon dioxide rich planet and back to complete its lifecycle.
>>
the reveal of Rocky's ship is such a great scene

Finished watching it a few minutes ago, enjoyed it quite a lot. Had a couple of moments that were almost tearjerkers, and a lot of fun and excitement.

60 minutes in. This movie is peak reddit. It doesn't even feel like a space movie. Stupid jokes, irony, nothing is serious. It makes me wanna puke
