Not a misunderstanding but I thought the majority of the Xmen looked stupid and ugly, especially Jean, Cyclops, Gambit and Rogue (especially specifically Jean). Luckily, nostalgia has blinded me and it seems normal now.

I think that's what happened too. And I think Lucas went with 'Darth' instead of 'Dark' for another reason, which is that 'Darth' sounds more alieny than 'Dark'. I know he's a human, but I think Lucas wanted a name that sounded kind of otherworldly.
