ITT: Objectively terrible movies that were preceded by insane hype
>>
>>220432543
Donnie Darko
Drive
Fight Club
Master and Commander
The Matrix
>>
Was the hype for the actual film insane though? Or merely the hypothetical of a Dragonball movie? Like surely fans were not hyped once the casting and scope of the film was clear.
>>
>>220432543
It' was like a 90s movie that came out 10 years too late
>>
>>220432543
Absolutely nobody cared about this shit beforehand. As >>220432740 points out, a lot of fans liked the idea of a Dragonball movie and loved to speculate on it, but by the time this got announced the hype had died down in general and all information about the film that came out killed interest completely. I think it didn't even get properly distributed outside Japan (despite being an American film).
>>
Hype dropped off a cliff once it became obvious it was going to be a retarded American teen flick.
>>
>>220432740
>was it hype or hype
>>
>>220433051
Was there hype for the property in general, or was there hype for this specific film that was made?
>>
>>220433062
>was the hype for Dragonball or was the hype for Dragonball
>>
>>220433087
Disingenuous reply. If Dragonball is Dragonball then why did the movie fail while Dragonball itself persisted as an incredibly popular worldwide phenomenon? Youd think the mexican market alone would supply tens of millions in ticket sales... So...?
>>
>>220432543
Saw it in theaters and I don't remember anything about it other than Bulma being cute
>>
I can imagine the studio doing surveys and determining that there was a high level of interest in dragon Ball, and then handing it to some schmuck writer and being like "yeah it's a story about a guy who does Kung Fu and shoots power spheres, go wild with it". But because the guy was bad enough at his job to be affordable enough for the studio, he just wrote what he knew, which was like, DeGrassi or whatever. They release the trailers and the studio becomes aware of the expectations surrounding a Dragon Ball movie, and they go to their team and the team is like "you can have a writer write anything you want, but if you want us to deliver [description of Actual Dragonball] we will need $200,000,000" and then the studio just gives up and prepares to file the losses against their taxable income
>>
>>220432543
There was no hype for this. Live action adaptations of anime never work.
>>
>>220432543
I don't remember much hype for this. We had already seen shitty adaptations come and go and this looked no different.

The trailers made it look like it was aping Spider-Man. Guess what the film did?
>>
>>220433909
That's two kinds to the studio, which probably demanded a My Chemical Romance/ Green Day aesthetic for the teens
>>
>>220432543
Parasite
>>
>>220433909
It was probably just the dumbest reason possibly like them already having another unrelated script they wanted to use
>>
>>220432543
at least it had qt3.14s cast
>>
Once they actually started doing animated Dragon Ball movies in western cinemas Battle of Gods & Broly movie were great.
The Freiza one was dogshit though
>>
>>220433819
This thread is about movies.
>>
>>220432682
Donnie Darko didn't get much hype and was pretty good. One of the rare movies where the Gyllenhaal siblings play siblings.
>>
The early-90s Chinese Dragon Ball movie is the best live action Dragon Ball movie
>>
I can slightly understand if someone liked TFA or TLJ, but there is simply no redeeming qualities in TROS.
>>
>>220432543
Goku x Bulma propaganda
>>
>>220432740
Nah, OP is just being the usual faggot-ass homo and pretending like that movie had any hype at all.

extremely retarded forced logic

I'm surprised mexicans cartels didn't go after him for ruining their childhood

There's always hype around live-action because of the desperation for validation that anime watchers have. Same when an anime film was nominated for an oscar.
>>
>>220436958
this one didn't have any

Coming off Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen. Trailers made it look like a crazy action fantasy movie with hot girls in skirts as the protags using what was, at the time, still a pretty novel visual style. I was in the theater ASAP. Maybe it didn't have *insane* hype but there was a lot of anticipation.

Then we saw it. Fuck.
>>
>>220432543
pretty much every sequel/reboot made in the past 15 years

in a few years they will call this shit a "forgotten gem" that didn't got the praise it deserved, just watch
>>
>>220438219
Might you describe the sensation as having been sucker punched?
>>
>>220438628
All things are relative. If Hollywood continues on its current suckage trajectory, then this and many other movies will hold higher rankings without their score having actually changed.
>>
>>220438628
Frankly that should have happened in peak woke years since it's a pretty nasty piece of demoralization. It might get buzz but I doubt it because of the juxtaposition between crowd pleasing stuff and misery porn. It's just a weirdly paced, atonal mess.
>>220438662
I would. Have never been so let down by a film. After the aforementioned films all being pretty fucking fun, it wasn't just that it was a shit film: it was the disappointment of it.
>>
>>220432543
Its not that bad. It is an interesting take on the concept of Dragonball

The pendulum only stays in the right side for a short time before swinging back to the left with much more force

Anime live-action is the same as videogame live-action. It always suck. The fans are never really hyped about it but they still want some validation from the general public.
>>
>>220432740
I was a boomlennial alive at the time. There was literally no hype for this dbz movie.
>>
>>220432682

>movie so shit, it brought the author out of retirement
Generational hatred
