You know it's always moments like these that give the horror genre a bad rep but how is that any different from in Die Hard when that blonde guy conveniently just stands completely still while still aiming just so Bruce Willis can dash over safely to the door on the rooftop? He wasn't even reloading either. Die Hard is obviously a much better film but my point is that lots of action and horror movies have dumb moments like this because they're harder to write for convincingly than people realize yet only horror gets crucified for plot induced stupidity. 24 was also full of stupid shit because it was a gimmick TV series built around keeping up the suspense for a full hour for 24 episodes per season and they didn't even make it past the first season before it became repetitive and it lasted for 9 seasons. It actually takes talent to write good genre fiction.

Palumbo is still active on Twitter I think
>>
>>220433040
idk it's a fine scene to me. other than he puts his left hand in the roof but in the next shot he's got his right one in. he coulda slipped down as his hand was going in.
but I agree that horror is hard, because it's basically constant physical tension and that's hard to plan and shoot without the occasional contrivance slipping in.
>>
>>220433084
But he hasn't been involved with movies since MSP in 2004. Vogel also vanished and TTP dissolved. Only one that made it out was their SFX wizard, who's now successful in Hollywood doing costumes. Even Karim Hussain made it out of the underground, and he was WAY less known than Vogel and Palumbo. Now he's pretty successful in Hollywood.
>>
>>220433143
I can think of a very strong reason Palumbo in particular was never going to make it, and it's because he's always been more or less openly anti-semetic, lol. He's also just a sick and a shrimp, but the kike hatred is a big obstacle.

Saying jews control Hollywood is like saying they control social media, banking, and the government. It's just antisemitic bullshit, they have no such control or power. If you continue to say they do, you'll be blacklisted from Hollywood, banned from social media, have your bank accounts frozen, and police sent to your house.

>idk it's a fine scene to me. other than he puts his left hand in the roof but in the next shot he's got his right one in
Jason's got a girl in a car with locked doors. He has a pitchfork. He can't get into the driver's side, so he goes to the opposite side and pitchforks the roof to awkwardly get at the lock with his hand from the top. He does this instead of pitchforking the girl directly on the side she's sitting on or even smashing through the window with the pitchfork. His folly allows the mouse to escape.

This is the week Fixbros. /ourgirl/'s new kino premieres at Cannes.
>>
>>220432684

The Franklin kill is the only proper chainsaw kill directly shown in the film. The brothers' tool of choice is the hammer, a preference shared by the both of them and established very early on. Blunt force trauma is simpler, more honest.

Killing is one thing, dismemberment another. One wonders whether Sally fully registered the significance of the fresh body parts (arms, etc) rubbing against her arms and the rest of her: they are precisely those of her recently killed, dismembered friends. I vote yes, she did pick up on this and it was a large part of why she was flipping out so badly. We are focused on the sight and sound, but her sense of TOUCH is significant here.

As Leatherface chases Sally, she autodefenestrates* out the BACK window and runs BACK to the gas station, a place we've been before. Sally is now in retrograde. She'll never get out by going backwards. The way out is forward, through. Onto the road in front of the house, where no one has been yet (although Pam and Kirk got close). A very amusing bit of good continuity: when they all get back to the house, Leatherface has very hurriedly hung a bit of "drapery" over the ruined second floor window, as part of his homemaker role and an attempt to cover over the damage. You can see it in one or two shots.

*The two GOAT films (you know what the other one really is) feature autodefenestration. But now that I think about it, (auto)defenestration seems to have been especially an especially popular technique in the 1970s and thereabouts. Defenestration is used at the climax of the action film Die Hard (1980s), as the hero drops the villain to his death out the window.

>>
>>220444234
I've said this before but one horror idea I want to see is about a serial killer who has an uncontrollable urge to see people fall from high places. Push over cliffs, overpasses, defenestrate from tall buildings etc. Basically full of scenes like the opening of cliffhanger.
I'd end it with both the killer and a detective running towards a little girl in an under construction high rise, one to save her the other to suicide splat with her. And the detective rather than reaching the girl, ends up tackling the killer over the ledge instead, sacrificing himself and killing the killer in the manner he wanted to kill the girl. They fall in slow motion, and as they hit the ground there's no sound, the screen goes black and the credits play.

Why are "modern" horror films so anti-climactic? I tried watching picrel the other night but nothing fucking happens. It feels exactly like the other "modern" slop ie. Conjuring, The Ring, Insidious, etc.

At least in the 70's/80's you got some nice bloodshed in the first 5 minutes and practical effects instead of jump scares.

>cobwebs channel
Bit of s,0,y,boy dork but gives horror recs in a mildly amusing manner featuring a lot of clips from the movies he talks about. Usually has a theme for each video
>New Castle After Dark
basically just a horror host movie channel where there are two hosts who introduce the movie and halfway in there is a intermission where they briefly discuss what has happened in the movie up until that point with some fun facts thrown in
>The Horror Geek
typical horror movie review channel. Features a lot of classics and lesser known schlock while taking a mildly humorous approach to the reviews. Pretty standard stuff.
>Scream Stream Live
two guys doing watchalongs of usually older, often public domain horror films. They primarily do triple features or sometimes double features so the videos are like 4 hours long.
>Creature Features
another horror host channel where they show full length movies. Not nearly as good as New Castle After Dark but I still subscribe to them anyway even if I don't really watch their stuff that much
>Todd E Walnuts
guy who shows off horror movie dvds and blu rays
>Monster Model Review

I grew up with a fear of things watching and/or jumping in through windows, thanks to sitting in our back living room of my dad's house when I was a kid watching TV.

There were big glass doors leading out to the back patio, and it was about 9 or 10 at night. I started hearing the door latch to the door lightly but repeatedly turning, only to see some guy on the back patio trying to get in, but the door was locked. I yelled for my dad, and the guy took off. Never saw him again, and that was all that came of it, but it was a creepy experience.

The end of Friday the 13th 2 where Jason jumps in through the window, Night of the Living Dead, and the various moments in Resident Evil games where zombies, dogs, and whatnot occasionally bust in through windows.

I still use blackout curtains to this day, just because I hate the idea of someone looking in through the windows.

2 years ago somebody rang my doorbell after I got home around 11pm. I went to go see who tf would be doing so (I figured one of my neighbors, maybe there was an emergency) and nobody was there. 2 nights later at about 2 am I heard someone trying to open my front door. I grabbed a weapon and flashlight and waited just a minute in the dark on the stairs. It stopped. I went to the door, shone the flashlight outside. Went out and checked the backyard as well. Nobody around. Freaked me the fuck out. 2 years later and I still think about it and make sure my doors and windows are locked and some times I hear things outside and check, but I never saw anyone. About a week or so again someone rang my doorbell in the evening when it was still light outside and I immediately went to check. Nobody there. Paranoia can be good some times, but it isn't a good feeling.
>>
>>220447086

I myself autodefenestrated (myself) out of my first-floor window one evening, due to my evil psychotic ex-neighbor. In the process of hopping the neighbor's fence, I put a pretty good gash in my arm. I shall not elaborate further, except to say that the horror of defenestration has some personal significance for me, especially since it's clearly used as a device in the two greatest horror films.

She had been having a days-long angry psychotic episode. Slamming her door, beating her children. A few hours earlier, I mentally resolved to just bug out if things got to a fever pitch, which of course they did. She and the baby daddy spilled out into the hallway, and a little kid is screaming. They shout right in front of my door. Then they get real quiet, and spooky. The little kid is shouting no, no. That is when I hopped out the window.

I am obsessed with neve's performance and mesmerized by how her eyes glitter in that movie
I can't stop rewatching it
I'm rewatching it in b&w and with the sound turned off, gets better with each viewing
body language acting is so intensely captivating and entertaining
layered and charismatic performances from this young cast
she's so scared and vulnerable, her body is shaking yet her eyes fiery and defiant
did they know they were doing something truly special? they must have known
I am puzzled by how I see many say wes direction is generic. wes is not a stylist like argento, wes is not distinctive like carpenter etc, same with opinions that neve performance is nothing special
outside of how argento films his females, i've never seen a horror camera this in love with its models
and as much as neve does it for me, I have to give props to wes to doing the same with skeet for the fem audience, like he did with depp in freddy, he knew the importance of glamor
it is striking how much iconic essence there is in this movie
how do you make something that is both generic and iconic
it reminds me of the great john mctiernan, how everyone loves his movies but no one is able to explain what's distinctive about his direction
wes career was downhill and the story goes that bob weinstein wanted to fire wes because he didn't like the dailies and instead he wanted it to look like (completely forgotten) nightwatch
the dp mark irwin (the fly) shot the first half, got fired for the house sequence and replaced by pete deming (evil dead 2, lost highway)
when even the guy who brought his a game delivering one of the most iconic intros in horror history and who did an iconic classic like the fly gets fired you know the standards were really high
so you get not one but two legendary dps involved
yet I've never seen people mention... scream, holy shit, god tier cinematography
even more painfully striking when 7 visually recreates some scenes but it's just this saddigital netflix sludge
neve

if you don't focus on what's reflected in neve's eyes you cannot understand wes' hidden layer

The shot of Casey hanging from the tree at the start is amazing. There's a surreal quality to it. And it reminds me of NOES in that Craven knew how to make blood look striking.

The intro apparently was cut a lot, both Casey and her bf's deaths. The cuts add to the weirdness, her bf looks like... he just instantly self-disembowels.

I'm harsh on 7 but the McKenna scene I think nailed the surreal aspect you mention - her suspended like she's flying, Ghostface entering the stage like an actor - very... giallo/operatic, that was a good throwback to the Casey hanging, if only the rest of the movie was like that. It just gets becomes lifeless afterwards.

I was never into Freddy but I was rewatching a few scenes earlier today, Tina's death is stylistically quite fun, Freddy overall is such a cool concept for fun visual work but... just leaves me cold, I wish I could like Freddy more.

I know why I love or dislike Carpenter, Romero, Cronenberg or Argento etc. throughout the years but Craven is a weird to me, I haven't fully figured out why some of his stuff deeply appeals to me while others just leave me cold.

It's also hard for me to disassociate Craven from nostalgia, TPUTS was my first horror movie and I find it fascinating, but if I discovered it today I doubt it would have much effect.

Agreed about the blood, it's so striking in the first two. Works so well against everything brightly lit, Billy just wearing a white t-shirt, it's up there with Carrie, everyone being injured and soaked in blood by the end, there are also a lot of giallo-fetishistic close-up shots of Ghostface's blade covered in blood post-kills, the redness of the blood amplified and contrasting with white shininess of the blade against pure black backgrounds, you'll notice those kind of shots disappear in the later sequels, there's less blood or the color is less striking, brown blood with grey lighting. Scenes where characters slowly bleed out instead of being quickly killed still make me feel woozy

The "uncut" version is available on various "movie downloading websites" and includes the extra few seconds that linger on Casey hanging from the tree. I remember that was the first version I saw of this film when I was a little kid (I think the uncut version was available on pay-per-view, and my mom rented it), and that shot scared the fuck out of me. Later in life when I rewatched it, I never felt that same sense of terror, but that's because I was watching the "R-rated" cut and didn't realize it. Only after downloading and watching the uncut version did I make this connection. Crazy how much difference a few seconds can make.
>>

In the odd occasion I actually go to a theater at this point, I go to the Alamo, so I usually order from their themed menu. I remember when It Part 1 came out, it was a circus-themed menu, so like a cotton candy shake (and an alcohol variant). I think that's where theaters need to go, if they want to survive. Make it into a premium experience.

That one, and the one with the dude trying to make it to Mexico in the desert while being cuffed to the dead cop were always my favorites. I also liked one with the English dude from Ninja Turtles 2 and Titanic, and I vaguely recall him being the asshole host of some ghost documentary show or something, and they go to a haunted house and ti turns out, oh fuck, this place really is haunted. At least that's how I remember it, it's been over 20 years at this point.

Has the same problem Late Night with the Devil has with the abandonment of its premise in the third act.
>>
>>220456343
That was my initial thought as well. I got frustrated with it over that because its first two acts were executed so well. Part of that breaking was permissible to me while it was competing signals fighting each other over the broadcast. That's an analog horror staple probably done most famously by Local58. I wish they could have leaned more into that instead of the surrealist montage at the very end and breaking its central conceit entirely to follow characters into their lives in sequences that would never be shown on television.

Ultimately, I view that as something the viewer is being shown an anomalous broadcast because an entity has taken over the airwaves. We're being shown this because it's what Buffet Infinity wants us to see. I can forgive BI a little more for this than Late Night because analog horror is such a niche thing, and it's difficult to imagine how BI could pull off what it wants to do while staying completely in its lane by showing what is essentially only documentary evidence. If they could have pulled that off, I think the final scene, the music video, could have worked very well, but as it was I still felt disappointed by it. Since it has gotten some good press, I hope that more filmmakers can try this style and find ways to adapt the format into feature length films that will work better than this did.

Overall Late Night I think was a better movie, and I think it's third act worked a bit better with its premise because from the outset we are told that we're being shown something too hot for tv, then as it goes on it becomes more clear that whoever is showing it to us is doing so to infect the viewer's mind in a malicious way and manipulate us.

You definitely made an apt comparison between them. I thought the exact same thing. Still both worth watching.
