You can't just drop a chart without a heading or a unifying point and expect people to be interested in it
>>
>>220435831
I strongly assume the unifying point is "favorites," which makes the charts in question only more boring.

They are just films I like the most but you're right in a way. It's a mix of arthouse and genre, old and new, personal and objective. I've also excluded animation entirely. Go ahead and post a chart of your own with some context.

Are you me? A friend recently gifted me Woman in the Dunes and I will now be watching to tonight because of your top tier taste. All that's missing is Il Sorpasso

I fail to believe that those aren't merely picks out of aesthetic consideration for presentability. Do you actually enjoy those self-serious, sterile turds?
>>
>>220438191
most of those (that I've seen) are really good though
>>
>>220438066
You'll love WitD if you're literally me. Il Sorpasso is great but I think I had Trintignant fatigue by that point, dude was in everything.

The almost total absence of anything containing CGI.

you should check out more Mizoguchi films, that one is the only you will find with magical realism but he's made other masterpieces that are worth watching
>>220438294
dude just took a deep dive in older films that happened to not have access to that technology... what's the problem there? If I told you one of my favs is from the silent era you'd say I'm being performative because nowadays we have films with sound?

Practically all of Mizoguchi's other films are about women being oppressed by le patriarchy. Sansho is great but it's misery porn. I feel Ugetsu is a more balanced and abstract portrait of war/greed/repression while still displaying his insane talents. Tell me if you have any particular recs.

One of his themes is also social injustice and the struggle between the human heart vs. rigid laws... In many of his films his characters (both male and female) are trapped and constrained by rituals and ceremonies and class roles dictated by the written and unwritten laws of their society, it doesn't matter if it's Edo japan or modern times. And often the characters end up persecuted by either zealots who look at the law as a totem that must be followed at its utmost consequences or opportunists that look at that law-totem from one side or the other and takes advantage from others whilst retaining his 'honor' or 'law-abidness'. In at least two of his films this line is uttered "Laws should work to serve the welfare of people", I think it summarizes that aspect of his work I'm rambling about.

My recs: The Crucified Lovers, Life of Oharu, Princess Yang Kwei-fei

I still need to watch more of his work, he's one of the greats to me.

what's the point of this? At least sort it or something. If you don't pick few of best at least in per ganre then its pointless library of movies no different form just list of Europe movies from wiki.

>>
>>220442197

I used to browse /film/, it might genuinely be the worst general on this whole website. They share one brain cell between them. I was hoping they wouldn't notice my thread but here we are.
>>
>>220442368
>>220442880
I stopped dumping them, niggas. jesus christ. and I don't post in /film/ anymore because I hate what has become of the general. I'm just keeping the naming scheme of the charts because I started the project when I still posted there occasionally. so how could I improve the charts? I thought they had a good layout. I will admit that I got a bit carried away with some of them and they grew to be much larger than I originally thought, but I don't see that as a bad thing
>>
>>220442353
The fact that this list doesn't contain Rang De Basanti or Dev D makes me kinda sad

decided to try and pick one per decade, couldnt include the 20s because of the grid style but my pick would be The Last Laugh

it's one per director and Anurag Kashyap is already on there with Gangs of Wasseypur

That's a shame. If it's one per director I would have put Eega instead of RRR.

I have the impression a huge chunk of arthouse types (cinephiles or whatever) are overcompensating 2nd/3rd worlders.

>>

Traditonal and stop-motion, not so much 3D, although there's a few that I like, such as Wall-E.
I'm going to list my favorites because I don't have that chart, but I think it's an overlooked medium.

Sadly the west doesn't invest much in proper adult animation and mostly focuses on children, which is fine, but there's a lot of untapped potential there I think

>Sadly the west doesn't invest much in proper adult animation and mostly focuses on children, which is fine, but there's a lot of untapped potential there I think
There's stigma involved here, as well as the lack of a tradition. Theoretically, they could leach off of anime's growing popularity, maybe reconfigure parts of a studio producing children's animation or have someone found a new one with some visionary billionaire's money or so... Which all reminds me that there already are studios doing horrible, horrible things for Netflix and Amazon (thinking Invincible, DOTA, that retarded D&D show, etc).

I know some of the Czechoslovak and Hungarian stuff (Pied Piper, Krabat, Heroic Times, Tragedy of Man, Son of the White Mare), but is any of it good enough to make you prefer it to film?
