The last person Yoda taught as his padawan was Dooku, and it made Dooku a worse person for the same reason it would make Anakin a worse person. Yoda's padawan holds an elite social position that Yoda doesn't disavow. It turns any developing ego into a very ugly thing. Qui-Gon was really the best chance he could have. Qui-Gon was probably the most special Jedi of his time, even if he wasn't the most powerful. He would humble Anakin without browbeating him, and guide him towards a life more befitting his demeanor, while keeping an eye on him and making sure he was listening to the Force. They were both adventurers at heart, and Anakin was essentially good. He just needed someone who could talk to him as an equal about how the galaxy is cruel and required a bit of ruthlessness, and to show him there was room in the Light for that.
