If you've watched the show then you realize that at no point were any of the background characters ever trying to get out. Dale was the only one and that was only once they knew Tabitha and the trees. Even before the show had started I think most of the people had resign themselves to the idea they weren't getting out. I don't think they would sink that low to make it actually just a dream. But it makes more sense to think of it as a dream-like place, or nightmare. Its not the real world, wherever it is. Its not logical rules, thats the only way to look at it and not get annoyed. Anything is possible there, its controlled by an entity that can will things, has power over the place and make anything happen, so nothing will ever make sense or need to from that perspective. I'm giving them an out because there's really no way they can tie all the shit together in any coherent way, and its pointless even trying to make theories. I dropped this show, after getting halfway through they hadn't answered a single question. They just keep adding more questions. I researched their previous show, "lost" and it was the same schtick. They kept adding mystery after mystery to keep viewers intrigued and in the end they had emotional catharsis for the characters, but left every single question unanswered. They're nearing the "end" of the show, but it's my prediction that the show will keep going on past season 5 as long as it has viewership. It will keep spinning it's wheels and dragging along. They never had any intention of answering anything, the story wasn't plotted out beforehand. I don't actually give a fuck about any of the characters, they all act like BPD assholes, so if they aren't answering questions by this point it's safe to assume they never will. In a few years, I'll look up this show to see if it ever had an ending. If it did, I'll watch the rest, if it didn't I'll forget it ever existed.

So, we know the show is doing a little gnosticism.
The pocket reallity is fake and imperfect so it i subject to cicles and resets.
We probably can peg the MIY as being this place's Demiurge (calling himself Sophia is bit on the nose).
We can supose two things. The cycle is near the end, from the seasons rounding back to summer and that the cicle ends and the world resets when all residents die. Then the reasen the toown looks outdated is becuse Victor lived and the world didn't reset.
Lucy and Ethan probably have power inside the dimension for they are of the chosen generation (desendents of the reencarnations of the original adversaries of the demiurge).
My other guess is that the souls of all that die there can only escape when the MYI is defeated.
