They need to shoot flat for the VFX pass. If that was shot today, she'd be on a green screen stage, behind a green painted box and wearing a marker suit so they could design and test screen an outfit the audience will prefer... and it would cost $150 million dollars to make and three years for post-production and editing.

The usual reason.
It's because normal people would like it.

It's elitism, right? Rich people hit diminishing returns on TV screen quality so color no longer looks good to them, and they decide what movies look like. OP pic would be blinding on a huge screen pumping thousands of lumens.

And yes, that is as dumb as it sounds. Expensive TV technology is taking precedence at a global scale over the most basic foundation of cinema, aesthetics. Marketers can only sell a very specific lifestyle and look with extra sharpness, pseudo 3D, features like that. Only the kineticism of modern camera movement and music is keeping them afloat and distinct from a particularly bad '90s movie.

All I can say to that is that if I don't see colors, actual colors not fake or desaturated shit, any movie is bad by default.
This doesn't include old B&W movies, obviously. Those had their unique visual language.

Excellent film. Depressing as hell, but an excellent film. Though I didn't immediately recognize Ava Gardner's butt, I knew that scene looked familiar

The film makes a few very minor changes from the book, but not enough to change the story or the message.

But yes, the film is excellent and you should watch it. But make sure you're watching the 1959 original, and not the 2000 remake
