Why is Paulie simply the best character in The Sopranos?
Paulie exemplifies the mafia better than any other character on the show. He takes enormous pride in being a gangster despite having no honor or loyalty and constantly breaking rules and causing trouble. He'll kill an old woman for a few hundred dollars. He's borderline retarded and lacks any kind of introspection, never pondering the tragedy of being alone and childless at his age. He thinks he deserves special treatment from God himself for tithing some of his ill gotten money to the church. His actor was extremely charming and gave a sitcom style performance in what was billed as a serious drama because either he or Chase understood that Paulie was ultimately a clown, a tragic sociopath
