You guy's know he had a film career way before this picture was taken, right
And way before this movie was made, right
You always use pics when he's old as shit, using a younger reference shot would really drive home the draft dodger narrative
Remember he and his entire film crew got cancer because they decided to film a geghis kahn picture on radioactive land
>>
>>220483864
Words mean things
Retards on here are so insecure that they have to declare every successful male 'gay'. Usually their evidence for this is like one still frame of them looking slightly vaguely fruity. It's retarded.

>John Wayne portrayed Genghis Khan in the 1956 film The Conqueror, which was filmed on location in the desert near St. George, Utah. The production,, particularly in Snow Canyon, was famously plagued by dangerous nuclear fallout from nuclear tests at the nearby Nevada National Security Site, which is linked to a high cancer rate among the cast and crew

The studio that owned him stopped him from enlisting. Besides, he did more for the war by promoting bonds and entertaining the troops during their rally shows (I forgot what they were called) than he ever would have done fighting in the military.

Did you ever aee a thread about Jon Bernthal and how tough he is?
I love threads about actors from the past because all of the retards here actually believe that those old farts were even tougher than the fake Jon Bernthal
Yeah, man. Those fags? Pretending to be tough on screen? Those fairies? They were tough.

I don't understand why people criticize draft dodgers when the draft is wildly unpopular. Every single time I've pushed someone who was angry about draft dodging they admitted that they oppose the draft and might have done the same in their place. The draft is slavery, you'd really hate someone for avoiding extremely dangerous slavery?
>>
>>220485203
With the high frequency at which this exact post shows up on /tv/, I have to think it's something more; maybe along the lines of:
> Wayne was a spokesman for traditional values both in the films and in his promotional life
> To attack traditional values, you attack Wayne

John Wayne wasn't some average Joe from the Midwest who didn't want to get killed. He was a shill for the government and all its wars.

Jimmy Stewart was a much more well known a-list actor who had already won an academy award and no studio stopped him from enlisting, while Wayne was still doing b-list movies and hadn't even hit the height of his popularity
>>
>>220485282
WWII was a far more justified war than Vietnam. That said, draft dodging wasn't unheard of but I'd imagine it was more personal than political. Opposing intervention in WWII after Pearl Harbor was basically impossible to justify.

John Ford relentlessly humiliated and bullied John Wayne throughout filming 'They were Expendable' over his failure to serve his country. Ford was a highly decorated World War II veteran, whereas John Wayne had avoided the military draft to stay in Hollywood and advance his career.

During a scene where Wayne's character had to salute an officer, Ford forced numerous retakes. He then turned to the cast and crew, using Wayne's draft-avoidance status as a weapon

"Duke, can't you manage a salute that at least looks as though you've been in the service?"

"Show him how to salute, Bob. We all know how to salute, don't we?

The relentless verbal abuse only stopped after co-star Robert Montgomery, a fellow decorated WWII veteran, confronted Ford on set. Montgomery told Ford directly to stop treating Wayne that way, causing Ford to back down

John Wayne's stardom was in that fragile phase just at the cusp of being a big star, that's why either he or the studio (I've heard both versions, I don't think anyone alive knows for sure) pushed to keep him out of the war. If he got put on hold to fight, his career easily could have stalled and died. Jimmy Stewart's star was already established, and him serving in the war could only serve to make him bigger and more beloved granted he survived. Not to downplay Stewart though, he's a hero and an icon fully deserving both of those distinctions.

John Wayne definitely avoided the war using connections and such, and it may very well have been for self-serving reasons, but I don't think it was out of cowardice or fear of fighting or anything like that. I think it was a calculated career move that may not have even been steered by him.

John Wayne's children were too old to be considered Boomers.
Actual boomers hated him because of Vietnam.
Gen-Xers vaguely understood that he was famous a long time ago
Millenials and Zoomers....John Wayne might as well not exist

you know most boomers werent actually the anti vietnam hippies right? that was a very small part of the actual population. boomers grew up watching more westerns then any other generation ever

>He rarely drank during the making of a film, but when a production wrapped he would often lock himself in his study, wrapped only in a sheet, and go on a solitary drinking binge for several days, followed by routine contrition and a vow never to drink again.
What a psycho lol
I wonder what fucked up mental shit he was processing during those binges.
>>
>>220485546
The President is in charge but is not in the military which is run by civilians. Reagan was still a civilian when he was in charge of the military. So you could say within the uniformed services which is different from being in charge of it. Even the SecDef/War is often a civilian and can even run it with no military experience at all.

The way things are going and where we are headed, the world might start making a couple more of them in the near future, sure feels like things are playing out in a way that doesn't feel exactly like it's repeating itself, but it sure does seem to rhyme
>>
>>220486268
From what I've read Ford's drinking problem got a lot worse after his ww2 experience, famously he filmed at Midway but apparently he was there during the D Day landings, although according to Ford his footage was too graphic to be released to the public.

There's speculation about if it even exists, or if it did exist but was since lost or destroyed. Ford had a habit of making up things about his life but I doubt he'd lie about this since he had huge respect for the military.
