I'll start with The Thing. I don’t get why this is considered a 10/10 classic. The effects are out of this world and the premise is good but I don’t care about any of these characters, nor do I think they do a great job on keeping you paranoid (outside of the testing scene which is great). It’s a fine movie but not a pillar of horror that fans make it out to be.

The psychologist was a fucking lying enabler

If the little girl really was Paimon and wanted her to get killed, why'd he refuse so hard to go to the party? The mom didn't feel guilty at all about it. She blamed the son regardless.

You expect me to believe the cult just wandered around their house the entire time without being detected?

tl;dr Fuck that dumbass family, they deserved what they got

It's a team of researchers, what were you expecting, a wacky, quirky bunch? They're believable, they feel like real people that could be in this situation. They work perfectly for the movie's purpose.
>nor do I think they do a great job on keeping you paranoid
I think the exact opposite

You were obviously trying to get a discussion started about the movie and you failed tremendously. Bad job.

Some of the effects are good, others look jank as fuck like the chest mouth. I'm not sure why it gets jerked off so hard vs. something like The Fly as far as practical effects go.

Completely agree. Watched it once, found it mostly forgettable. Very solid craft and compelling setting, but sadly nothing else sticks.

Now for the hot take...

Modern film is amazing. Love it, love it, love it. The level of scale the medium has reached is almost unbelievable. Take recent pictures like Avatar and Dune, for example: Alien worlds portrayed with photorealistic detail and for hours upon hours at a time (per movie). There isn't a single epic of the past that can keep up with that.

Recent Mad Max is a great example of that too: vibrant, fantastical worlds on a whole different level. The amount, dynamicity, and severity of carnage that those movies deal with make you feel like you're watching a production from the 1920s shot in another world.

Movie standards in the past were much lower. That is the truth. They were much lower for productions (behind the scenes conduct), they had worse writing (people back then weren't already bored out of their minds by bog-standard shit), and the main element that blinds people to their relative mediocrity (other than pure nostalgia) is the use of film over digital. Actors were also uglier (male and female).

Your post seems to indicate that you were probably hyped up for this movie by people you knew and let down when it wasn't a 10/10 movie for you. I think its an easy 8/10 movie as a fan of it. I think its a classic but would never say its flawless or nearly flawless and a must-see movie. But it ain't for everyone, just thunk its funny I agree with most of what you say.
My hot take may be that I don't like Harrison Ford in either Star Wars or Indiana Jones roles. Something about his acting and characters annoy me. He seems more likeable in interviews and such so I don't think its his personality but more so his acting. I don't get it.

Along with all that, the characters are intelligent and make rational decisions to figure things out. It doesn't have any 'stupid' characters that do stupid things to keep the plot moving.

The characters were all flesh out also. They each had a unique personality and identity, you get to know them through out the movie.

Not being able to feel or relate to any of the characters is strictly a you problem.

I said my piece.

films peaked in the 90's and early 2000's. the reason for this is that before that time in the 80's but more so in the 70's and before the level of special effects and other enhancements that came about.
consequently it should mean that films in the 2010's and 2020's are better. but thats not the case either. since the rise of CGI really has affected how movies just feel. I believe all those real sets and real special effects are actually physical and real, just tricks the mind better than watching CGI slop.
with that being said i also look down on people that pretend that black and white films or films from the bygone era of the 50's are something that can be passed up on, and you wouldn't really miss much. it also doesn't make you a true kino king watching old obscure films when most films during that golden age of the 90's and 00's were so meta that ignoring people that only like films has to be some level of retardation in itself.
I'm also not just saying that these films were better because it was before woke or when i grew up and were all just connected to our pasts. its really is the best decades in the over 100 years of film history.
and i will not apologize that you think i need to watch old slop to be a true cinema expert.
that also doesn't mean that we cant have good movies anymore. no that's not it at all. i just feel like they need to make them like the use and limit CGI and stop being woke faggots.
people most affected? zoomers who think their new movies are cool and old fags coping.
roger ebert died just in time to witness the best but miss the gay shit.

>I dont care about any of these characters
I dont know what more you really need, sappy moments where the characters talk about their feelings, or their wife and kids at home? Each character has a distinct personality and defined purpose both at the research facility and in the group dynamic. You also get very subtle hints at how the characters feel about eachother as things start to ramp up. Thank god they didnt overdo it with schmaltzy moments where characters talk about their hopes and dreams when they get back home because its literally irrelevant. Less is more for horror movies like this.
>they dont do a good job at making you paranoid.
Hard disagree. The way the characters slowly turn on eachother and have to constantly find new ways to prove eachothers identity is very well done. The film constantly throws new info at you and subtle editing techniques to make you wonder who is the thing at any given time with multiple red herrings throughout the movie. Thats only something you can enjoy on first viewing, but subsequent watches where you know how it ends its still fun to peace together the timeline of when each person turns into the thing and side from Fuchs's death (due to deleted scenes) the movie does a pretty good job of planning all that out in the background without explaining or even showing it to the viewer.

That part is subjective experience so it's normal that we don't see it the same. I view a lot of it like that, especially the many "difficult conversation" or "character monologuing in a serious voice" ones. So it might not be true for you but it's definitely true for me.
