Backstory, some dike journalist from New York had gone to Wyoming and in a bar in a small town.
She claimed she saw one man at the bar look at another man in a sexual way and it gave her the idea to write a short story about two gay cowboys which she got published in the New Yorker magazine.
It was later picked by a movie studio as an idea for a movie.
The whole story is some fever dream of a literary New York dike.

It's very by the numbers, but it gets carried into pure kino by Heath Ledger being a generational talent. Nigga was like 24 when this got filmed and the guy absolutely conveys the weariness of Ennis as a middle aged closeted homo. One of the best performances of the century.
