The new Mortal Kombat is also a lesser film than Paul Anderson's 1995 version. It's too bloated, too lore-fixated, not focused enough on the martial arts which is really the core of a movie like this.

It used to be that the most throwaway cash grab studio movie would be blocked, lit, shot very well. There was also a bunch of music video directors turned film directors who brought really strong visual sensibilities to cinema. The shift to digital eroded a lot of things because it allowed movies to start micromanaging the look of a film in a way that made it worse. The director of photography used to have a lot more veto power over when the set was ready for shooting. Now you've got producers deciding how the lights should be set up. Hell, you've got ACTORS demanding the lights be set up a certain way because they think the lighting is unflattering.

Music is such an important part of the Resident Evil movies. They changed composers in 5/6 of the movies to keep the music fresh and innovative. Bold images call for bold beats.
