The target audience is people too stupid to realize it's cynical & self-deprecating. I used to tell my parents that I hated BBT because it was like a nerd culture minstrel show, and they said "well as it goes on it focuses more on the relationships between the characters" but that just made me even less interested because there's no universe where a person like Sheldon ever has someone interested in him, let alone would be willing to maintain a relationship like that.
I think the only episode of the show I ever liked when I was too young to realize how stupid it was (it aired when I was in middle school) was the one where Penny gets addicted to an MMO and actually becomes more like the rest of the gang. If they had made that an actual status quo change where she becomes more nerdy due to the constant exposure of living next to these Memebase loving retards, I'd just call it incredibly shallow instead of a personal insult.
