>AMC+ announced today that it will be the new, exclusive streaming home to 13 seasons and 175 episodes (including specials) of Doctor Who (2005 – 2022) in the US, beginning Thursday June 11. The longest-running British science fiction television series, which premiered 20 years ago this year in the US, follows the stories of a regenerating Time Lord who travels on adventures through all of time and space.

In Lungbarrow, the Doctor is Leela and Andred's son. He was the first natural born child on Gallifrey in forever since the Time Lords were cursed with sterility. The curse was finally removed in that book, and 7 was adamant that Leela name the kid after him.

The Doctor was the reincarnation of The Other

Him being loomed too was dumb when the Other could've easily been a future Doctor travelling into Gallifrey's ancient past. Both Parkin and Platt had the Doc born in the future, but with their adventures as the Other happening at opposite sides of their life.

>Auld Mortality
>A Storm of Angels
According to these
>The Doctor became a famous children's book author on Gallifrey
>Susan is the daughter of the Doctor's daughter. Probably Miranda who was the daughter of a future Doctor who became Emperor of the Universe post-Gallifrey Chronicles.
>Susan herself is old and has grandchildren of her own. And she's the President of Gallifrey.
>The Doctor creates a young clone of Susan to go on adventures with.
>Old Susan was eventually labeled for execution but secretly switched brains with Clone Susan, and this is the one we meet in the show. So TV Susan's a whole grandma pretending to be a teen, unbeknownst to the Doctor.
>>
Interesting the material that the novels came up with in the 90s/00s that NuWho would end up stealing, namely a Time War that ends with Gallifrey's destruction.

There were like 9 Gallifreys and the Doc only destroyed one, which is why the war continues without him in the Faction Paradox stuff while he has amnesia in the EDAs. Big Finish explained this away by having Brax travel into the past to prevent Romana from regenerating into Romana III in Enemy Lines and preventing the entire War in Heaven. But because war is inevitable, the Last Great Time War happened instead.
>>
>>220500852
The 50th anniversary special really ruined the last great time war.
>soldiers on gallifrey fought with star wars-looking pew pew guns
>daleks using all their conventional weaponry
>the moment didn't actually do anything
>gallifrey got teleported away and the daleks killed themselves with crossfire
Where were all the star-eating cosmic abominations? Where were the timeline erasing superweapons?
>>
>>220500931
Moffat himself admitted it was a mistake to try depicting the war on screen

I'll take these origins over the Penelope Gate nonsense because that reeks of an obvious self insert by Kate Orman. She was also described as being a redhead and "plump" IE FAT. Disgusting.

This. Most classic female companions were capable and intelligent (without crossing the "girl boss" line). Only ones like Susan and Mel fit the stereotype. In the case of Susan, she was originally intended to be an audience self-insert, and fellow companion Barbara was very strong-willed.

I'm surprised the show never brought back the reapers.

yes and no. the craziest ideas were filtered by the editors. authors can say whatever 20 years after, only the final product counts. in NuWho the showrunner is both writer and producer, and the BBC higher-ups doesn't give a shit about the lore so he has carte blanche to rape the characterisation and/or the lore as he pleases, which all three of them did.

For the record a lot of criticism of the Colin Baker era is post-nuwho revisionism. Season 22 had about the same ratings as Season 21 and viewers thought it was fine.
But Seasons 23 and 24 were godawful and were received as such even at the time.

I don't entirely blame them, but it's not as shit as it's made out to be. C.Baker's stories generally range from surprisingly good actually, to just weird and demented in quite a fun way.
>>
>>220504738
I love how weird and demented most of S22 is. It's quite the opposite of what they were doing with Davison.

Peri is also captured quite often, but usually it doesn't last very long. she's more like a permanent redshirt, and the 6th Doctor is physically attacked almost as often.
Mel is pretty much the same but she screams higher, so that's the only thing people remember
early Tegan also was a bit of a damsel in distress in S19, but the cliche was subverted to turn it into a mild form of psychological horror since she has to find the strength to overcome a journey she didn't chose, and she effectively succeeds. so in the next seasons where she's way more confident.

I've spoken to people who were watching in the 80's, and their comments on C.Baker more or less begin and end with saying his costume was shit.

Colin Baker was an interesting experiment. Peter Davison had nothing much going for him - he was mostly just "nice" and soft-spoken and perhaps even a little bland. Put up against weak villains. But here comes Colin Baker. The Doctor is an embodiment of pure chaos. Look at his fucking coat for Christ's sake. The universe is full of cannibals and pedophiles and talking poo businessmen. Davros feeds Onions Green to people. It's all delightfully twisted.

I guess, but it seems like people have an unenthusiastic attitude toward that phase, at best. People very rarely come forward and say they loved Colin Baker when they were children.

Sylvester McCoy era Who just wasn't very good IMO. i say this as someone who likes the Jon Pertwee era the most: it's too fucking Earth-centric. they went everywhere and everywhen in the 1960s, why are robots always invading 20th-century England?

i think the gap between the production design of a daft telly series and a big-budget Hollywood film has essentially disappeared now, but this was a show where that never mattered much. the one thing they DID have control over was the writing. there are maybe three decent JNT era stories.
>>
>>220505137
Yeah, the insistence on making the Doctor "special" just paradoxically makes him less special.
He's cool specifically because he's just some minor noble who got sick of his stagnant society, and ran away to have adventures, and the whole thing spiraled out of control.

also, for fucks sake, the endless cope in regards to Susan not really being his grand daughter, because the Doctor "can't have sex".
Look, just because it's something of an unwritten rule that he doesn't have relationships on screen, doesn't mean he comes from a species of sterile aliens.
Maybe it would be improper for him to be shagging about because he's a grandfather, and he still has feelings for his original wife, eh? Maybe it's just that.

>the endless cope in regards to Susan not really being his grand daughter, because the Doctor "can't have sex"
that's not the real problem. the real issue is the Doctor leaving Susan live her life with a human she fell in love with. this made sense in the context of the episode because both the Doctor and Susan were supposed to be human, but it's impossible to reconcile with the later retcons that say that the Doctor is an alien and regeneration is universal in his species. if the Doctor can't have sex WITHA HUMAN because of this, why did he let Susan do it? so the point is less about Susan not being the Doctor's granddaughter and more about her not being a Time Lord, or at least not a full-fledged one.

i could not give a fuck tbqh. he's inherently mysterious, they probably realised early on they couldn't do much about his origins without stepping on each other's toes. how many British series back then had multiple writers and WEREN'T an anthology series (like The Wednesday Play)? who ultimately got to decide all this stuff?

a missed trick with the revival was not making (normal) Time Lords antagonistic again. they're downright nasty in The War Games, i think a lot of fans agree they became too goofy over time. now, The Master is evil because he had a bad acid trip. Rassilon is evil because he contracted time-madness. Omega is a skeleton-dog. why can they not just be absolute arseholes by default?

yes. but basically, what >>220505984 said.

>>220506052
it's an absolutely terrible idea, sure, but the actress gave it some gravitas.
>Let me take it from the top. Hello, I'm the Doctor. I'm a traveller in space and time, and that thing buried down there is called a TARDIS. Time And Relative Dimension In Space. You're going to love this.

i'd like to see her adventures, please. just the normal ones she goes on. maybe she's a bit too pompous and grandstanding, but it actually reminds me of The Shalka Doctor in a good way.

point is, they anticipated some controversy that didn't materialise, and then the most ironic thing in the world occurred pretty much by happenstance. i don't get the obsession with writing these dangling threads, rather than just spinning a good yarn.
>>
>Starring Warwick Davis as The Doctor
They could do it like Capaldi where The Doctor turns into a previously met face.
>>
>>220506315
They're just pandering to the WE WUZ crowd. They need to retcon basically everything that's been added to the show's mythology since the end of 11's run at this point.

I like when the Time Lords are like Kryptonians, if you'd forgive the capeshit comparison. They're not necessarily assholes, they just think everyone else in the universe is beneath them and doesn't deserve to be treated decently. But their society breeds a lot of sadistic bastards.

It was also embarrassing when Bradley, Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, and McGann actmogged Whittaker in her final episode. I felt bad for her - she really didn't stand a chance with the crap they were giving her

i don't doubt wokery played a part in it. but the Beeb had already hit its own quotas, all that remained was to tell a good story. everything about 'the Timeless Child' is bad to the point i cannot give a single solitary shit that The Zero-th Doctor was a little black girl.

BASED.

i mean Queer as Folk is essentially a story about a 30-year-old gay nonce. we understand he's a bit of a cunt, i don't get the aversion to depicting flawed characters doing bad things.

Dr Who tortures a Dalek in picrel, Eccleston said he liked it because it showed a nastier side of him. now, you can rule out anyone doing something evil based on what they look like: the Segway kid or she/her Rose were doomed to be 'nice' from the start.

conversely, RTD has an absolute hate-boner for Americans, for some reason.

Beyond War Games. There was this audio in the Early Adventures range that threw out Season 6B in favor of setting it in the middle of Season 5 and wiping the Doc and Jamie's memories at the end.

I say this with the greatest respect (sort of), but as someone who's been a Doctor Who fan since before 2005, when is this fucking show going to be cancelled already? It's just gone way way beyond any chance of recovery at this point. It needs a rest, at the very least. Are we going to get finally released from this hell or what?

>>

The BBC are weirdly insistent on continuing to make it, but they refuse to change it in any way that will actually bring back audiences.
Should we call it spite at this point? Probably.
>>
>>220507183
A instance of the Doctor having an actual alien perspective, which I'd like to see more of.

I also actually like that aspect of Kill the Moon. The Doctor was right. it wasn't his call. It was a moral question for the people of Earth to handle.
