Writing a super smart character isn't that difficult. You just need to write your plot around that character. It requires good drafts and a plan and some foresight.It becomes a problem with TV shows though, because you have strict writing deadline, story lines that often run longer than they should, other characters you have to service, actors you need to take into account, contracts you need to oblige. It's literally that worm writer character. Sage is supposed to be super smart, but the writer is probably given 2 weeks to write the script and they have to tie up multiple characters plots, they have to write in a Supernatural reunion, they have to set up 5 new characters for a spin off. They need to make plotlines for all the remaining characters. Actors demand X amount of screentime. Producers want X amount of this and that. That said, the whole can't logic with love is pretty shit. They should have just had her have multiple back up plans, reveal that she had been feeding the Boys the plan to give Kimiko the chest blast power was her plan all along or some shit. Although that plot is pretty shit too.

Say you have a schemer character who comes up with a play to get a bunch of people to do something. You will not have them outright explain it but show them interacting with them while subtly hinting shit and trying to convince them all individually to go along with something while presenting it in the narrative as being done independently of him until a later point. Also add in little things here and there to hint at his plan like say a book he has nearby or him doing something which on the surface looks like him playing his own role in the greater “group” plan but in actuality he is facilitating part of his scheme.
