The movie was pitched as Romeo and Juliet on Titanic from the start. It was never supposed to be a sidestory, the romance was the main story, and the sinking makes it a tragedy. It's stupid to compare it to Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese or The Abyss where the romance only has a small part in a grander story. Titanic doesn't have a story, in the movie or IRL. It's just rich people on a ship and then it crashes and sinks. People lived, people died. The end.
