I honestly think Soldier Boys arc this season was not fine.His flip flopping was him fighting his instinctual disgust towards Homelander because of his dream of having a son, someone to pass his legacy to. SB said he gave Homie V1 because of Clara, but we already know through Ashley that he is actually proud of him, and doesn't want him to know. Sure Clara probably played a role in giving him the V1, but it was probably a secondary reason at best that he used as an excuse to not express his feelings towards his son. They should have showcased that MUCH better at least to the audience, but the retarded writers were too busy baiting Vought Rising. SB calling Homelander son was even a hint towards that at the end. That he actually cares and wishes him good in the future. But after Homie heard that, he couldn't just let him go, he couldn't just let the first paternal figure that genuinely cared for him unconditionally to get away. He just had to keep there to feed his ego and need for validation. The irony in this situation is also that the first time SB dropped the macho act and genuinely expressed his feelings to his son in a healthy way, it immediately backfired on him because Homie craves that love and validation above everything else. SB finally moved on from the unhealthy self hating mindset that he inherited from his own father, he decides to be better after what he experienced in Fort Harmony and he pays for it. It's a genuinely good story and a tragic arc for an already tragic character. But the dialogue completely botched it and made it sound like SB helped someone he hates just because the woman he loves was fucking Homie as well. On top of everything, the story once again reminds us that Soldier Boy is not a threat to the world. The dude was telling the truth, he doesn't want to be worshiped as the father of god, he doesn't wang glory, fame or parks named after him. All he wanted was to retire and to live his life doing drugs and fucking grannies.
