Take Star Trek for example. You had to write and shoot 26 episodes in a year, and each episode is basically a short movie. You aren't going to wait to see fans' reaction to Picard being assimilated to determine what happens; there's not enough time. That "we can't focus test it" pressure meant they had to do it right the first time.
