i started watching the expanse for the first time. i am halfway through S2 and i really dig it. what season does it inevitably go to shit? i will no doubt finish the entire show but i'm sure i'll end up reading the books, i like the setting a lot. also, does anderson dawes ever show up again? jared harris is amazing in everything
>>
i more or less enjoyed the whole show, it just ends on a cliff hanger which is a big no no

i think its season 4 that takes a drastic change for one season but i didnt mind it
>>

It never has a sharp decline but gets gradually worse every episode

you'll probably have your own "it's shit now" stopping point. if you're going to finish the show it's better to just stay out of that kind of expectation
the end of season 3 is where you'd be advised to stop watching if you're the type who can stop watching a show after a given season, but you'll be too curious to see where the story goes from that finale to actually stop
for me the main problem was that everything about the protomolecule was vastly more interesting than what they'll settle into exploring which is the plight of the belters
they've truly been victimized but they're just so insufferable culturally that i couldn't feel the sympathy i'm supposed to, especially when the writers conveniently avoid having to address a solution by forcing everyone to deal with the extremists in their ranks
all the protomolecule stuff ends up only being explored in a cocktease "detached sidestory" way in the last season and i was sick of that shit
>>
Season 4 is a clear step down, but i enjoyed it. Season 5 would be good if it was only Amos bizarre adventures, but it's not.
Season 6 is unwatchable garbage.

It ends on a cliff hanger, but the reason kinda makes sense. They didn't want to pull a game of thrones and try to make up more story before the book was written. So they just ended it with a bread crumb of "what could be next?"
>>
S3 is the last good season. It also ends on an acceptable note.

Honestly wish I'd stopped there, and just wondered what the show could have been.
>>
S4 was when it was picked up by Amazon. The show fell apart pretty quickly after that and a series of disastrous decisions were made because the showrunner started huffing his own farts.

I'm surprised Syfy let it go and never tried to make another show like it. It's always been a channel that can pull a certain demographic of autist but they continually sabotage themselves - even with the stupid fucking rebrand they did.

The protomolecule stuff felt like a cop-out to me because the author didn't know how to drive his story. What was always interesting in the franchise was seeing the different plausible societies emerge in reasonably hard sci-fi a few hundred years from now which felt grounded and underexplored because it didn't go hard either way in good or bad. Just have monkeys with slightly more advanced technology doing monkey things, we're going to change that much.

It would have been 10/10 with Earth-Mars rivalry as the backdrop and smaller plots focused on new technology and conditions challenging humanity.

It's definitely >>220506617, and I say that as someone that still enjoyed the whole series overall. The earliest seasons are the best, each tends to have a slightly different tone given that they mostly were adapted from different books.

>Season 4 is a clear step down, but i enjoyed it.
Same. The return of Miller, in a way and the introduction or Murtry was cool, as was getting to see Ashford in action.
>Season 5 would be good if it was only Amos bizarre adventures, but it's not.
The entire plot of Naomi and subsequently Filip was insufferable. She's stuck on a ship that's a trap - cool - we don't need to see more and more scenes and episodes dedicated to that, when just one would've got the message across. I didn't really give a fuck about Filip at all, either.

I'm a sucker for most sci-fi, I can suspend disbelief with the technobabble/far future shit but The Expanse still spoiled a lot of other sci-fi for me. Nowhere else have I seen details like "bottling" the oxygen and throwing on suits in preparation for a battle, holes needing to be patched after said battle, things like 0 grav affecting your body's shape (albeit largely not shown), "flip and burn" moves to slow down ships and so on.
Watching a lot of the actual space parts of the show was easily one of the most enjoyable parts - I'd love for anything to pick up and run with that near-future "hard sci-fi" theme.

there's a big time skip in the books, that's why they ended it there.
do you want to see something like for all mankind with terrible aging makeup and actors that don't give a fuck? it was probably a good call. amazon was beginning to fuck up the show anyways.

I enjoyed through S4, since I enjoy 'let's explore a weird alien planet' scenarios. S5 feels weirdly underwhelming given the material it deals with and S6 had its budget and run time violently slashed to fund Rangz of Power.

I stopped watching because of her. I made it through season one. I couldn't stand her, I couldn't stand looking at her face. I hated that there is not one attractive female in the show. I hated what they did with Miller who was my favorite character early on. I watched a couple of episodes of season two but I couldn't stand it anymore. I dropped it.

The acting is bad. The characters are so corny. The casting is horrendous. Steven Strait is not believable as a leader. Wes Chatham is so flat. Dominique Tipper is hard to look at. Outside of Thomas Jane, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Jared Harris, and David Strathairn who are superb, the rest of the cast is mid to poor. The story is interesting and has potential but it is never realized.

Skip the show, read the books.

>what season does it inevitably go to shit?
S4 is a slog without question.
The show never fully goes to shit, the last couple seasons pick up again but it feels like they end it in a rush.
S2 is probably the peak.
>>220508140
SyFy couldn't afford to keep it running. Their hope was for it to be bought out by a bigger studio and were going to cancel it if not, hence the whole #SaveTheExpanse campaign.

She was annoying af, for sure. She keeps being annoying throughout the show too.
But not one attractive female? Really?
If you like ethnically ambiguous Asian women, this show was perfect.
