It's just a regular old thriller. Western live action equivalent might be something like Cape Fear.. It just gets fellated incessantly cause it's anime.

There are anime directors that want to do live action but their forte is anime. So they make anime that feels like live action then when they make live action their live action feels significantly "off".Mamoru Oshii is a prime examplr of this phenomenon.
Anything made by Satoshi Kon is a masterpiece.
