I watched Primer last night, and of course, it blew my mind. Yet I only have one question. What happens to all the doubles? Are they all just out and about in the world with the originals?
this movie is not good
>>220509861That’s exactly why they drive to a different town and lock themselves inside a hotel room
I couldn't function that long in a tube without some sort of youtube device. it's not as if you're asleep, you have to be awake because it's scary
>>220509861The real horror of Primer isn’t paradox, it’s accumulation. The doubles don’t disappear; they pile up, and the characters lose track of which version of themselves is even "current".
>>220509861They don’t eliminate the doubles, they outmaneuver them. Every time they travel back, another version of themselves continues existing along its original timeline. By relocating and isolating themselves, they reduce the risk of crossing paths with those versions. The film never resolves the duplicates; it just shows how quickly the situation becomes unmanageable, which is kind of the point.
>>220510136The movie "The Prestige" (2006) had an interesting spin on that whole subject
>>220510136> The real horror of Primer isn’t paradox, it’s accumulation. The doubles don’t disappear; they pile up, and the characters lose track of which version of themselves is even "current".
>>220510352you’re brown
>>220509861There aren't supposed to be doubles. The guys who rent the hotel room get in the box that afternoon. Neatly closed loop. There's only doubles once they start preventing that from occurring. Its a little strange because Shane Carruth completely sidestepped grandfather paradoxes; From the character's perspective, they're on a linear timeline. If Abe goes into the box on Wednesday, goes back to the preceding Tuesday, gasses himself preventing him from going in the box on Wednesday, it doesn't affect the Abe doing the gassing. He went in on Wednesday, that's all that matters. It's more or less Dragon Ball time travel.
>>220510155Why couldn't they simply reason with themselves?I don't see how it would ever be an issue since they have the correct mindset to time travel to begin with.
>>220510136That's a dumb take. It's obvious who is current, it's never (you)
wasn't it implied that even by the start of the movie time travel had occurred by maybe one of the future Aarons? and also there's the whole time traveling thomas granger that is never fully explained
>>220512033probably, it's the most obvious twist of time travel plots, it's already occurred when discovered
>>220511997If you're the type of person that could reason with yourself you both know it, and it'll be easy. If you're not, you both know it's impossible from the start and any double is your bitter enemy.
>>220509861>>220510136>>220510155It's been over a decade since I watched it, but don't the duplicates just enter the box?If you enter the box at 6 PM and go back six hours into the past, there's two of you at 12 PM, sure. But eventually, the first version of yourself will enter the box and "disappear" into the past at 6 PM.So before 12 PM, there's only one of you. At 12 PM, future you comes out of the box, and now there are two of you. At 6 PM, past you enters the box. After 6 PM, again, there's only one of you.I believe you're talking about a plot point later in the movie where one of their duplicates doesn't enter the box and disappear into the past, which causes problems. I forgot what happens exactly, but yeah, at the end of the movie, there's multiple copies of the protagonists walking around because their meddled too much with their own past.
>>220509906*is goodMy finger slipped and of course auto-filled that.
It's brilliant how the movie, possibly even unintentionally, touches on a bunch of themes. On one hand the particulars of the timeline and how it gets altered is intriguing. On another it is about how much can you actually trust a close friend with whom you made such a discovery. And then there's the issue of how much can you trust yourself, because as soon as there are multiple copies of yourself, each one will inevitably start to have their own agendas and plans. And then there's the overall theme of how it is impossible for humanity as a whole to deal with this kind of invention. And then there's the almost cosmic horror of how this will fractal further in who knows how many ways as it becomes impossible to contain or control the effect and its use.
>>220512364You're correct. If they don't get complacent, the double will always repeat what they did and get in the box. That's why they freaked out early on when one of their cell phones went off, possibly altering their doubles behavior. Once they start trying out maneuver each other they start to make bigger mistakes leading to the double meetup.>>220512445I also like the horror of the machine just straight up damaging their brains. >why can't we write like normal people anymore? It's such a fucked up line and the other guy is trying to play it cool.
>>220511997>Why couldn't they simply reason with themselvesThe entire narration of the movie is an Aaron double trying to reason with one of himselves.
>>220511997There can only be one.
>>220509906it's complete psuedbait garbage
>>220510184machine wasn't real though
Today I will remind them.
Movie ends on a literal>you're just jealous of muh wife and kidsout of fucking nowhere
So they've already gone back in time and did a bunch of shenanigans before the movie starts right? t. stupid
The movie is whatever you want it to be
>>220510352People like you are the reason effort posting has died a slow death.
>>220516068no because they can't go in the past before they created the machine
>>220509906Filtered.
>>220509861Shane?
