British film unions are a bit more strict than in America, and this was complicated by Cameron coming from the decidedly non-union productions of Roger Corman. They'll do whatever you want, but they have set work hours and breaks. In the US they'll work as long as you want them to but by god you will pay through the nose, they have detailed agreements on hourly wages and how it goes up not just for hours worked but at different times of the day and for missing breaks. The American film unions have their own strictness about it being a closed shop - they alone will be doing it. Ridley Scott caused a big bruhaha on the set of Blade Runner trying to hold a camera, I've seen an interview in one of the sense of scale videos where one miniature effects person said they weren't even allowed to hold a ladder steady for a cameraman cause they didn't have a union card.

>>220514453Yeah that's what we did back then. Me and some other guys rallied all the nonsmokers and we started taking "smoke breaks" too until almost the entire floor cleared out every time anyone went on a smoke break. The bosses got pissy and started restricting smoke breaks and all the lazy smokers pitched a fit. Shit was hilarious. These days smoking is banned entirely indoors everywhere but the most rural machine shops so it's a nonissue but for a while in the late 90s and early 2000s when indoor smoking bans were just starting to kick in some funny business was happening.

>>220514596Its an industrial vs agricultural divide, masquerading as a north vs south divide. The nobility had munch at 1ish, supper/tea at 6ish and dinner at 9ish. So everyone else copied those timelines. But post industrial revolution, factory workers needed their main meal earlier in the evening because they were tired from work and also went to bed earlier in order to wake up earlier. So they started having their evening meal around 6ish, when the upper classes were having their tea. So that became the name adopted in industrial/northern areas for the evening meal. It was called high tea, because it was eaten at a high table (nowadays called a dining table) as opposed to the low tea table the upper classes ate their afternoon tea at.Over time as the nobility have lost cultural relevance, high teas just became tea in those areas, and 'afternoon tea' became a gimmick for tourists and is had in the early afternoon now.

>The crew would stop work every Friday afternoon for a lottery draw where the winner would take home a prize of about £400. One of the crew running the lottery came up to Cameron with the tin and said, “do you wanna put anything in for the draw, Jim?” Cameron allegedly shouted at him, “F*** the draw!!”>Hurd said Cracknell felt he should be directing the movie: “Jim would ask him to set up a shot one way and Derek would say, ‘Oh no no no, I know what you want,’” says Hurd. “Then he’d do it wrong and the whole set would have to be broken down.”>Cracknell, eventually, was sacked which led the whole crew to down tools in protest>Cameron eventually held an hours-long all-hands meeting where grievances were aired and both sides agreed to an uneasy truce for the rest of the shoot>Filming was difficult as Cameron, a Canadian, had little familiarity with British film-industry traditions such as tea breaks, which interrupted production for up to an hour each weekday
George Lucas put up with the same shit when making 'Star Wars'. If they weren't bored, they were sarcastic. They were rigid and union regulated contrasting against Lucas' fast paced indie filmmaking. They wouldn't ever work past 4 pm for tea time and he would have to beg and negotiate for more time and the best he could squeeze out of them was that they would only permit it if they were in the middle of shooting a scene. It didn't help that they didn't care for the story and thought the whole thing was just a cheaper Doctor Who. It didn't help James that he had fired a senior members of the crew and that every one almost mutinied when they found out some dorky Canadian was making a sequel to Alien when Ridley Scott wasn't. And none of them gave a fiddlers fuck about Terminator when none of them showed up to the screening of it that James did to show them his work. That's what caused him to bootfuck the tea cart. His wife made him come out and apoligze to them for it.

>>220513316The Brits controlled the tea market outside of China and Japan, because most of the good stuff was grown in India or Kenya, which were parts of the British Empire, before the Empire all trade routes were controlled by the British East India Company and British tea clippers like the Cutty Sark were the fastest ships on the oceans and could get tea anywhere twice as quick as any other nation. This meant that the British and British colonies got the best tea for reasonable prices, if you were not then you had bad quality tea (like todays Lipton or Typhoo brands) AND had to pay premium prices for it in lower quantities. Tea meant so much that we turned the entirety of the proud ancient Celestial Empire of China into opium junkies just to get our hands on it too, it is that fucking amazing a drink.Unable to secure a plentiful and reasonably priced supply of the quality stuff, lesser nations like the French, Spanish or Italians had to settle for things like coffee. This is why the Boston Tea Party was such a big deal, their strength of feeling was so much that they were rejecting the best thing in the world (tea is better than sex, you'll learn this as you get older and wiser). While coffee will give you a buzz it happens all at once, unlike tea which is a steady satisfying release, and doesnt contain the superfood anti cancer and healthy heart antioxidants that tea does. It also tastes bitter and doesn't have the lovely quenching flavour and isotonic qualities of tea.Bovril, a beef marmite drink that tastes delicious and superpowers the immune system, is another drink that had a defacto government ban on being exported outside of the Empire.

You need a lot of calories, and you can't really eat a lot at once since you'll be working and don't want to get all logey. So most people at multiple meals a day, in the hobbit when they're talking about "second breakfast" it really isn't an outrageous thing. You'd wake up in the morning and have something really small and simple to break your fast, that would get everyone going around the house, and by the time everyone was ready to get started on the day's work they'd have another small meal that was usually hot before going out and working for a few hours, then have a mid morning snack/meal, work a few more hours, break for a mid day meal, do some smaller stuff during the hot ours of the day, finish up, have an early evening meal that was the big meal of the day, and then you'd have something small shortly before bed called "supper" something for your body to sup on over night until you could break fast again.

>>220513347>We've had one, yes. What about second teabreak?

>>220521181>The Beits saw Lucas as a young guy trying to make a Flash Gordon movie and ended up underestimating the project.Damn, even GL himself didn't believe in the success of Star Wars.FOX underestimated it which allowed Lucas to get full ownership of the IP, making him bank.
>>220513368Its more of an old person thing. Younger people aren't as fucked about it. I don't drink tea or coffee.
>>220515660Dude nobody is arguing that Cameron wasn't a cunt himself. James Horner can attest to that when it came to the constant gaslighting about the soundtrack. But the actors are all on record talking about how scenes were constantly getting interrupted in the middle of shoots because the Pinewood crew kept doing something retarded.>in the middle of shooting>cameras stop rolling, lights come on>everyone confused>OH BING A BONG IT'S TIME FOR THE STAFF LOTTERY EVERYONE PITCH IN GUVEven Biehn was yelling at them to stop fucking everything up

>>220514313Tea is a subtle and nuanced drink for aristocrats. Coffee is brown sludge amphetamine to keep the slaves awake for their toil.
>“I’m probably going to get in trouble for this, but this is true,” Cameron started. “And I said [to the crew], ‘Every day as I drive out of the studio, I pass underneath that Pinewood gate, the big Pinewood Studios [sign]. And I think, someday I’m going to be done with this film…someday I’m going to drive out that gate, and I’m not going to be coming back. And it’s going to strike me. It’s going to be an emotional moment because I will know that I’m gone, but you sorry motherf*ckers are going to spend the rest of your lives here.’”>“And I walked away,” Cameron added. “Like, mic drop.”
>>220523859He was lucky that at the time he started making these films the average IQ of an American dropped by 50.
>>220517156Calling the midday meal "dinner" doesn't determine your status, it's whether you have "tea" or "supper" as your evening meal
>>220513275The Aliens behind the scenes production movies are still on youtube, worth a watch. Impressive how good the movie ended up being considering how at odds Cameron were with everyone involved.
>>220523859> I will know that I’m gone, but you sorry motherf*ckers are going to spend the rest of your lives hereSteady, well paid work oh the horror! Meanwhile Cameron is a miserable cunt who acts like such a bitch that it's become common knowledge
>>220513316They don't really. Its that tea is the default killing time small treat drink. The people who genuinely and substantially like coffee drink just as much coffee as the corresponding Americans do. Of the people who don't love coffee, in America they still very often drink coffee because thats the default, whereas in Britain they're more likely to drink tea. In both countries its a similar sized subset that love coffee and need to drink it constantly and care about how its made.
>>220513275Do brits nowadays still do it? After so many mussies, africans and pakis flooding their country and the negrification of their culture, I thought they simply won't do it anymore
>>220526100
Coffee and tea are both good. There were years when I'd drink tea all day, loose leaf even, sometimes green. Drink coffee mostly these days.

>>220513558What did she say?
>>220514180>drinks tea all the time>also calls non-tea-related meals for teaWhat is the purpose of this? Doesn't this just make things confusing while adding nothing?
>>220515181I thought the Brits were mainly after porcelain in China. They were getting their tea from India but China provided the ceramic goods from tea pots, plates, bowls, everything in mass numbers. Also other Euros are really fucking weird about coffee. Everyone has some super special way of drinking it and DEMAND everyone else conform to their own weird way or else fuck you you uncultured piece of shit fat american pigdog! If you do not drink your coffee exactly the same way with the same additives as this one mountain village in north Italy, or this random farm village in southwest France then fuuuuuuuuk youuuuuuuu. And all of them collectively seethe and rage at how Americans north and south treat coffee like it's just another drink they can down at any point in the day without ceremony or performative bullshit.

>>220514092Shat on a turtle
>>220513347So a large part of why Brits cannot stand working for Americans is due to their need for a special tea break every 40 minutes?
>>220513316it's not the 1980s anymore. the New British population primarily drinks coffee, and coffee has outpaced tea sales in the UK for years.
>>220513347Somehow I thought working with Brits in Bongland would mean way more beer breaks or crews killing 12 packs behind a trailer in the middle of the day mid-sift.
>>220513483Kind of this, why does it require a break? Why can't they drink it while working like all coffee people
>>22051686490s movies were generally better than 80s movies
>>220513483>>220529193they call it 'tea' but it's technically like brunch but in the afternoon. you're not just having tea, you usually also have a sandwich or biscuit or something with it as well. the intent is to take a break and either compose yourself or have a chat with someone. the drink is merely a vehicle to enable it.
>>220513620coffee built the empire. nobody in the UK drank or gave a shit about tea until the latter half of the 18th century; before then it was coffee. part of the reason Americans revolted against the tea tax is because it was seen as some new forced fad to try and displace the coffee that had long been popular in Anglo society.

>>220523161lefty types tend to see employment as a source of wealth redistribution from the rich to the working class. they don't care about the actual job being done, it's just another opportunity to "punch up" in the broader class war. that's why they advocate to work as little as possible for as much money as possible even if in the medium term it sinks the project and in the long term will cost them their job. "so long as it fucks over a rich man, it doesn't matter"
I've never worked on a film set but if the tea breaks are really about caffeine why don't they just carry a thermos of tea around?
>>220529220I guess I just don't understand what a movie set is like because every manual labour job I've had I just have some food and drink nearby I can quickly eat whenever, and I'm always chatting because I'm always only a few metres away from several other people

making movies isnt a normal job where you can do regular breaks. its very time dependent and setting up these enormous domino reactions, you cant jist take a break every 2 hours.
