The characters are drained as consumables. Sindel, the woman who single-handedly mowed down almost all the heroes of the Earthly Kingdom in MK9, dies here in a minute at the hands of Sony Blade. Kung Lao, a legendary warrior- turns into a revenant and is merged in order for Liu Kang to become the God of Fire. Cola was invented in the first part, and in the second he was killed in the very first battle, dumped into acid. And all this for the sake of "emotional motivation," which normal screenwriters could write without cheap sacrifices.

There are practically no special effects. Where is the magic? Where are the lightning bolts, fireballs, and ice spheres? Instead, there's a gray picture and a couple of cheap flashes. The fight scenes are boring, the choreography is at the level of school amateur performances. Even the fatality, the main feature of the game, is made without a soul, just for show.

The makeup is terrible. Milina and Baraka look like they were made up in a basement for 5 bucks. Baraka looks like a clown with his fangs glued on. Shao Kahn is just a big guy in a helmet, no greatness.

The movie looks cheap. The creators saved on everything.

Bottom line: If you know Mortal Kombat at least from the games of the 90s, you will spit. The film was made by people who scrolled through Wikipedia over lunch. The scriptwriters don't know ent, the director doesn't care about the fans. The only reason to watch is if you want to see how bad it is.

In my opinion, this is the worst film ever based on Mortal Kombat. It is fundamentally flawed. The most important thing in movies like this is the fight choreography, and here, it is an absolute nightmare. Not only did these scenes make me cringe, but I could clearly see exactly how the fights should have been choreographed, considering the characters' abilities and the environment. And I'm not even a fight director. It feels as though the film lacks a proper age rating; the combat scenes look so boring and ridiculous that you lose any interest in watching without skipping ahead almost immediately.

The casting is another disaster. The actors feel too old for their roles and simply don't fit. On top of that, there is practically no plot - they couldn't come up with anything better than the tired "Earth is in danger" trope. Not a single character evokes sympathy; instead, they either leave you feeling nothing or just flat-out irritate you. An oversized, clunky Johnny Cage and a tiny, aged Raiden look particularly pathetic.

Overall, it's a failure on every front.

Raiden's lightning is clearly visible in the movie. He took a back seat as a combatant, likely because he's too OP otherwise and it would've lead to an easy victory for Earthrealm. Presumably. But there's a lot of lightning and fire effects, and Liu Kang uses more fire attacks in this movie than any other MK film.
I agree with the Mileena argument, but she was poorly cast on top of everything else. Martyn Ford did a good job as Shao Kahn though. In terms of physicality alone, he's much better than the one in Annihilation.

I feel like MK 95 worked because back then the game didn't really have much plot going on other than "otherwordly deadly tournament with gods and monsters", so they came up with a decent, even if barebones, plot for the movie.

In the original MK2 movie (Annihilation), Johnny Cage was killed off in the opening scene. So this is a lot more respectful to his character. He's also instrumental in Earthrealm winning in this one, because he destroys an amulet that directly leads to Kitana being able to win. The production is poisoned. People can see it from afar.
They chose not to make Liu Kang the protagonist in the first movie, opting instead for an original Asian character tied to Scorpion. The actor could have easily played Kang, though. On top of that, they intentionally left out Johnny Cage as a co-protagonist because he was a white male, only teasing his potential appearance in a stinger after test audiences pushed for it.
The fact that they hired the aging Karl Urban, Reddit’s favorite actor, and plastered his face all over the marketing for the second one made it feel less like a course correction and more like a potential new subversion, something that actually happened. Who’s the real hero of the story? Not Liu Kang, that’s for sure. And not the OC, since they got sidelined by the backlash. No, it was a female character. They also cut any hint of potential romance between established characters: no Liu Kang x Kitana, no Johnny Cage x Sonya. None of that.

No, Mortal Kombat 1995 had a lot of good fight scenes. Much prefer the fight scenes from Paul W.S. Anderson's Mortal Kombat. The sequel had some good fight scenes also, but many of the other stuff was just bad.

Will 100% be better than the live aciton movie. Just from the trailer alone it seems they're taking a ton of creative liberties and it doesn't "feel" like Street Fighter the same way this anime does. I think SF should just be confirmed to the realm of anime. It doesn't have that photo-realistic style that Resident Evil has that would lend itself to live aciton.

That’s part of what made older films so much more enjoyable. They’re asking us to suspend our disbelief. It’s way easier to do that when you’re being tittilated by hot women teasing their supple young bodies. They call that “movie magic”
