It's clear they had no idea where they were going, the character arcs were not planned out, etc. Every season was just "random bullshit" they were not building up to anything, so naturally with no real build up there never going to be any payoff. On top of that every character gets reset every season, so there is no progress. The entire show has just been spinning its wheels for years now with nothing to show for it.
Season 1 was the only great season. The moral grandstanding from leftards was minimal enough to ignore. But the storyline was extremely strong. A group of rebels operating in secret to take down a corporate back hegemony of superpowered antivillains. The comic ends with Butcher fulfilling his arc of being a violent, dangerous killer and trying to kill millions for the sake of wiping out anyone with even a sniff of super powers, if you don't build to Butcher being an unrepentant villian then you lack the underlying character motivation to drive the story to a natural conclusion. Now the show deviates far too much to keep a continuous throughline to the intention of the comics but for the most part it just doesn't know what it really wants to do in general, the titular Boys aren't really the featured characters they are in the comics, their lives as people exist but the depth is missing from their characterization and it focuses more on keeping the villains in the limelight partly as cheap shock value and mostly because the writers don't seem to care what direction all of this is heading towards. So many moving pieces but none of them seem to exist for much of a story purpose.
i can see how normies enjoy the show. it's got fun, fresh, novel moments. twists and turns. doesn't take itself too seriously. mostly good looking cast. as a racist you can watch s2 and enjoy the scene when stormfront fucks up a bunch of minorities. or if you're anti-racist, you can feel bad for them. there's something for everyone. it's like a buffet. if this show was on in the 2000s or 2010s, on hbo or whatever, it would've been a massive hit. since it's on amazon prime with ads, it's got limited reach. hell, i think it would be much bigger had it been on netflix.

I'm finding season 5 enjoyable enough. If you didn't like it past season 1, then you should've stopped watching a lot earlier. It's just lazy writing.Also agree that the show was a lot more promising when it seemed like it'd be villain of the week and the Boys taking out The Seven one at a time. This show has this awful habit of always forcefully regressing back to the status quo every time something interesting happens.In season 2 specifically they held Homelander back using the flight footage.In season 3 they all decided that a soldier boy, someone who just wants to smoke and fuck his way through life is somehow a bigger threat than the genocidal manchild that is Homelander.And in season 4, the shot Butcher and Kessler in the back riding off to the dark of night with the virus could have lead to a very interesting s5 where trilateral war kind of situation where the the boys must not also stop Homelander but also go after Butcher in his mad crusade across the country, killing supes and planning to weaponize the virus against Homelander.Instead Butcher is back being his old self with the boys, only this time he is maybe slightly more edgy. Even though his season 1 self is arguably way more edgy than even his season 5 one.So much wasted opportunity in this show.
