Frank is just incredibly pessimistic and has a very skewed world view due to his military training and experience in vietnam. It allows him to stay focused on whatever the objective is and frank himself understands this is imperative for combat effectiveness which is why he chooses to stay detached from pretty much everything and everyone. The newer runs completely mess this up by trying to keep him up to date for modern readers who are complete retards. Frank doesn't work as a sandbox vet constantly having emotional breakdowns because he got too close to someone he got killed, frank is a boomer vet from a war that was very unpopular in the zeitgeist at the time where he saw some of the most gruesome atrocities one could experience. He's a man who tried to turn off the kill switch after coming back home and adapting to every day life even starting a family and then having that all ripped away from him. Him losing everything flipped the switch back on and convinced him to never turn it off ever again. Frank is a one man army waging a never ending personal war against the criminal underworld.
