This politically motivated casting would've only been permissible had he decided to go a Coen brothers Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? route and made a story about the Odyssey that wasn't set in the same time period.

Being "white" is never an integral part of a character, unless the character is a "colonizer" or evil in some other way. Being white cannot be used as an integral foundation of a positive, character defining backstory, or a positive motivation for a character's actions. Being brown, however, is ALWAYS an integral part of a character's motivations, backstories, and any other positive or mixed aspect of the character, therefore they cannot be recast. If the character is evil and black, however, it would be perfectly fine to recast them as white.It's a similar line of thinking to "wypipo have no culture," because white culture is so everpresent, widespread, and foundational to the modernized world that many elements of it are hard to notice at all if you're somebody even in the position to say "wypipo have no culture."
