The damaged tattoo reduces Joker's behaviour to adolescent attention-seeking: a teenage boy who hopes to anger his parents and teachers with his rebellious fashion statement. But a true madman doesn't think of himself as mad. Ledger's Joker believed he had important social insights to share with the world.

Imagine if Adolf Hitler had "damaged" tattooed on his forehead. No one would take him seriously as a villain.
