What people miss about the movie is who is on the hero's journey.
Maverick learns nothing and changes nothing. When he tries to change something his best friend dies. It’s the world that needs to go on a journey to accept him, and it does, exactly how he was at the start of the movie.

Legitimately a great film, with really amusing dialogue, and while Top Gun: Maverick was an entertaining movie also, anyone who claims it's as good or better than the original is smoking crack
