The literal plot is absurdly and confusingly underexplained in terms of how what's going on with the angels and instrumentality and stuff, although it is explained enough to understand its essential meaning to the story, but the thematic and psychological stuff is fully accessible. If you had to guess, what do you feel are the themes of evangelion? What do you think it is trying to say? If people don't understand NGE after watching it all, rebuild included, I often recommend watching gurren lagann. Its the counter to NGE. Once you finish it, you will understand NGE better imo. Also Asuka is best girl.
