Now that Ebert is dead, Mark Kermode is the only way for me to form my opinions on films. Do you trust movie critics, /tv/?

I only trust Armond White

hes great but then will have his moments go mental on the simplest movie, and overrates anything that is cheap and about music.
I agree with him on Exorcist 3
>>
He scores points for his love of Silent Running and Blade Runner but loses 78973923874 points for his obsession with The Exorcist which is the most over-rated, over-hyped movie imaginable.

Brainlet spotted.

What his opinions on stuff??
>>
Haven't bothered with that cuck since about 2010, got fed up with him injecting his own politics and retarded societal takes I to him reviews
I'm sure he has only gotten more insufferable over the years
>>
>>220546443
He is more the successor to Barry Norman than Ebert.

He has his own opinions, but can engage with differing views. He's much more open minded than Ebert and Bazza. On the other hand Kermode is sometimes a bit of a sheep if there is a tide of opinion.
>>
>>220546456
have you seen his social media in the past couple of years? The guy became unironically mentally ill
>>
>>220546488
Ignore the anon who called you a brainlet. The Exorcist is horrifically overrated, and that's the only horrifying thing about it. I think it's a case of "you had to be there." At the time, it was hyped as a movie so satanic that it became more than a movie, and something like a spiritual experience. And the press ran stories about audiences feinting and screaming in theatres, similar to the hype around Blair Witch. If you were an impressionable kid at the time, as Kermode was, you might have been swept along with the publicity. But when you watch it today, it's just a big joke.
>>
Kermode : I was really really surprised that this movie is ... actually the way the director deals with the story and the characters reminds me of ... which I think came out rather well
Mayo : Yes, same.

>Kermode is sometimes a bit of a sheep if there is a tide of opinion.

He's a sheep when the director or the lead actor give him an interview. Then he treats the film more kindly. I've been listening to Kermode for decades and this is definitely a trend. Filmmakers gain bonus points on the review if they show up at his studio.

>watch an episode of his tv show
>he contrasts stand by me to boys in the hood
>notes that while the climax of stand by me is white children finding a dead body at the end of the film, in boys in the hood, their reality is dead bodies at the start of the film
I'M NOOTICING

The only semi-relevant film critic for the past few decades has been Jonathan Rosenbaum. However, he's 83 years old and doesn't write about new films much anymore. I frequently disagree with him, but his knowledge of film history and open mindedness and curiosity remain unparalleled.

Thanks anon. Your explanation makes sense.

Sometimes he writes well, other times he can barely be bothered to write a paragraph.

deepfocuslens is way more in-depth, she's less of a starry-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights reviewer, hope internet fame never ruins her. Even though she's one of those reviewers who sings praises for 2/10 horror slop and critiques the length of major character studies like Drive My Car.

America's toughest film critic. Downloaded all his books from Anna's. Every once in a while he makes an egregious factual error, but his good taste and prose style is still impressive after all these years.

Why do Americans need someone to validate their taste in films? Critics are literally leeches

Kermode is smug and boring in a way that Siskel and Ebert never were.
Also RLM is dead.

I don't understand why people get so ass mad about critics. Or read what OP typed
>Do you trust movie critics
What do you mean "trust"? Trust with what?
I follow a couple of critics because I enjoy hearing their opinions and how they justify them, especially if they're different from mine, but I don't "trust" them with anything
I still have to go watch the films and see how I feel about them
>>
>>220546443
You idiots that care about critics, do you not get that no one is given a platform anymore unless they support the agenda? Find me one that will admit in their review of Nolan's Odyssey that Helen of Troy couldn't have been Black. That's just one example.

Reelviews James Berardinelli is my choice. I usually agree with most of his reviews and his comment section is pretty funny on some older reviews.

Trust them with what? Having an opinion about movies?
What a silly question.
I listen to kermode from time to time because he's genuinely well informed about movies over the last few decades and he always makes a distinction between if a movie is good and if he liked the movie.
I don't agree with him about everything, I didn't agree with Ebert either, but they're both usually able to articulate their point in a way that even if I don't agree with the ultimate opinion, I can see their argument and understand where they're coming from.

Kermode had his mind raped by Trump and is another untrustworthy, politically driven, mouthpiece for the left. His reviews are worthless.

>"Okay, this gets us nowhere. I'm leaving this conversation."
>"KEK, FUCKING OWNED. UH... what's that? They're blocking the Strait of Hormuz? Heh, they're playing right into his hands. Another ingenious stratagem from the 4D chess master. I expect to reap the benefits of this very soon. Total Jewish victory tomorrow. I hate the Jews, but I'm also on their side because... I don't know. Orange daddy said so."

British guy, definitely left wing politically, nicey nicey liberal dad.

Sometimes he is pretty funny, like his Sex and the City 2 review:
https://youtu.be/uHeQeHstrsc

He also made a documentary on the Exorcist and loved that film:
https://youtu.be/59Jtdr0PcRM
https://youtu.be/xcUXtEeVy-Y

He certainly has the appearances of someone pretentious and can border on that sometimes but he can also be dumb and down to earth. I probably agree with him like a third of the time but he is funny, knowledgeable and down to earth despite his politics and image. And he reviews plenty of stuff and he doesn't take hours to do so either. So in general he is a pretty alright guy and leagues above 90% of the slop reviewers people use.

>>220546970
>He's a sheep when the director or the lead actor give him an interview.
Huh? He doesn't do the interviews all of the time and I have never seen him do anything like that. In fact, I have seen him interview a director then later criticise their movie on many an occasion.
>>
>>220550434
Name 10 examples of Kermode doing that in a movie review.

Why are people incapable of forming their own opinions?
What's the point in being sentient if you just allow other people to tell you how to think?
