At the time, it was hyped as a movie so satanic that it became more than a movie, and something like a spiritual experience. And the press ran stories about audiences feinting and screaming in theatres, similar to the hype around Blair Witch. If you were an impressionable kid at the time, as Kermode was, you might have been swept along with the publicity. But when you watch it today, it's just a big joke.

I listen to kermode from time to time because he's genuinely well informed about movies over the last few decades and he always makes a distinction between if a movie is good and if he liked the movie. I don't agree with him about everything, I didn't agree with Ebert either, but they're both usually able to articulate their point in a way that even if I don't agree with the ultimate opinion, I can see their argument and understand where they're coming from.
