AAAAAAAHHHHHH
I JUST SAW A GODZILLA SIZED SPIDER CRAB MONSTER
IT DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE OUR TINY CAR
BUT NOW I HAVE TO KILL MYSELF AND MY ENTIRE FAMILY

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>
reddit the movie
>>
>>220551712
His entire family consisting of one boy because the wife had already been killed by monsters.
They were out of gas in the middle of nowhere, had the option of a quick death, and could hear something coming. People have killed themselves in far less dire circumstances
>>
very funny ending to the movie

It’s a horror film, anon.
And the short story just ends like The Birds, so this was better than just copying that
>>
>>220551712
spiders could kill slowly via poison and wrap you into web to suffer in half death for days or who knows how long, while you slowly rot. It's not unreasonable to think that suicide is a better death
>>
>>220552721
What a crazy leap.
What's wrong with the ending?
>>
>dude this unimaginable existential horror has materialized out of the ether into our world and every second is terror beyond comprehension let's just roll the dice and hope we'll be ok guys hope my young son doesn't get ripped to shreds by something lol!
reddit actually thinks this wasn't the most reasonable decision to make

the ending was forced misery porn. Fine, he kills everyone in the car, but then literally a minute later an army convoy rolls by extinguishing the mist with the woman who ran out on the first day in tow. Give me a fucking break.

reddit the post
>>
>>220553924
What's so hard accepting that they thought it was the end of the world and the least painful way out was a bullet? They just saw and interacted with horrors beyond anything ordinary in the store. What should they have done?
>>
>>220553924
it's only misery porn if you empathise with thomas jane
>>
>>220553924
so you're fine with the logic of him killing everyone in the car but not if it happens momentarily before the mist being extinguished. i guess the suspension of disbelief only covers unexplainable lovecraftian horrors from other dimensions and not simple coincidences.
>>
>>220552902
Dodged a bullet, likely literally. She would've killed your children and herself the second tiktok went down for maintenance.

>>

My issue is what happens after his decision.
Whoops you just killed your child for no reason, you should have waited a minute.
It's dumb. If it just faded to credits while he's crying it would have been better.
>>
>>220552684
This.
The woman villain had a lot of faith, but uses in a bad way.
The main character didn't have any faith at all.
>>
>>220554127
Isn't about God saving the world after he sacrifices his son and all that people to him?
Some kind of message similar to Abraham.
>>
>>220554127
Lmao how did the ending filter you this badly?
Yeah dude that's the whole point. They just made the ultimate hard decision and then it turns out safety was mere moments away. It's supposed to be a shocking gut punch. That's the point.

It's like the cartoon mining meme where a guy is inches away from a room of diamonds but gives up digging cause he sees no end in sight.
>>
>>220554127
Wouldn't he have heard the engines behind them?
>>
>>220554200
>It's supposed to be a shocking gut punch.
It came off as forced. Darabont only kept the scene, which he filmed as a joke, because King thought it was hilarious and insisted he keep it.
>>
>>220554127
do you realize how stupid this makes you sound?
>why film not end in way that make grug feel right???
it's not dumb, there's no logical explanation for why the film ending the way it does is more dumb than how you think it should have ended. there's a subset of the population who are literally incapable of conceptualizing a narrative diverging from their own interpretation of it. my 70 year old mother teetering on dementia is the same way, arguing that something doesn't make sense because it doesn't satisfy her own arbitrary standard of resolution for a fictional story.
>>
>>220552721
Lazy shock value. It came out when M Night Shamadingdong was still popular with this twist endings.
>>
>>220554072
Not the anon but yes.
I'll let you in on a secret, things don't just happen in a script, there's not a thing as "coincidence", if it's there a writer put it there for a reason, which in this case I assume was "a cruel and ironic twist of fate".

Which is absolutely unnecessary for the vibe of the entire story up to that point and it is so over the top that it yanks you out of it right in the last seconds, all the horror, dread and desperation immediately dissipate off the movie and you have a kind of a laugh for the absurdity of it all.

Which again, comes out of nothing because the randomness and absurdity of fate was never a point in the story.
>>
All it needed was to extend the third act, so as to establish their state-of-mind and impress the notion that is was, in fact, the end of the Earth. The run-time, from escaping the supermarket cult and mobile Jonestown, was far too short -- perhaps <10 minutes -- which isn't enough time for the idea to baste with the audiences' suspension of disbelief.

Beyond that (granted, "that" is no small issue), the film was pretty well done.
>>
>>220554270
if it's about faith then I'd say the randomness of fate is important, like Job. In any case, he jumps out of the car to die immediately after killing everyone. If other people didn't arrive immediately, he would've succeeded and that's not the point of the scene. He's an atheist who thinks he has the right to control life and death but actually God is in charge.
>>
>>220554227
That’s a lie. He was offered a much higher budget if he changed the scripted ending but refused to do so
>>
>>220554214
They hear ‘something’ coming including screeching monsters which they don’t realise are being incinerated by soldiers but they obviously don’t realise what’s happening
>>
>>220554270
I'll let you in on a secret: things do just happen in a script, because it's all fucking made up. The reason the writer put it there is because that is what they felt would throw the audience off and leave the most impactful ending. They were right of course, considering we're here right now talking about this mediocre film that came out ages ago.
Again, you talk about movies like a redditor, like it has to fulfill A, B, and C and anything divergent is some sort of failure. They didn't "set up" the absurd ending so it's wrong. No one fucking cares about your basic bitch narrative theory. Stephen King is a fucking retard schlockmonger but even he saw that it worked better with the film ending.
>>
>>220554127
The first time I watched it, I definitely thought the same as you — the army showing up mere seconds after he killed his own child felt almost funny, like a very dark joke. I thought a better execution would have been him wandering through the mist for a while, desperately hoping to find a monster, only to eventually run into the military.

But after a couple of rewatches, I think the army arriving so quickly was part of the point. The ending is fundamentally about losing hope. The fact that they appeared just moments later shows that if he had clung to hope for just a few more minutes, everything would have been okay. So the real message of the ending is: no matter how terrible a situation you’re in, never lose hope and give in to despair. Because the moment you do, that’s when you lose everything.
>>
The ending to the short story is a lot more depressing. The world is completely fucked and the narrator is coping hard when he thinks he heard someone on the radio.

>>220551712

Maybe he should have stayed in the supermarket filled with supplies that the monsters had made no attempt to attack instead of jumping into a car and drove out into the unknown.

I mean hell, he was the only person with a gun. He didn't even need to worry about the apocalyptic bible thumper bitch. If she fucks with you, you put a .38 through her head.
>>
>>220554528
It’s just the end of The Birds though. They get out and start driving with no idea how far it’s spread or if it will end
>>
>>220554535
Yeah, they should have given them a reason to panic and leave like a bunch of crazed zealots trying to fucking murder them or something. Maybe they should have had them sacrifice someone else earlier to prove how dangerous they were

i had the pleasure of walking in on a roommate watching this right before this scene and got to watch her see it for the first time and it was great lol
>>
>>220554377
Then it was a lie to his benefit and Darabont's a retard, because the script doesn't justify the ending.
>>
>>220554399
Then the obvious move is to make a judgement call. You only shoot yourself or others if they're in immediate danger.
This retard couldn't even count to five.
>>
>>220554072
If they're being presented as human characters then they must act like human beings, no matter what strange shit is going on around them.
>>
>>220554535
I mean yeah. Considering the ending they didn't really care about self preservation. They could've at least taken their chances killing the zealots.
The worst that would happen is that they'd die, which they obviously were fine with.

>>220551712
Why are you retards suddenly pretending this ending isn't great?

It's not complex bro it's obvious.

>>

>>
>>220555498
Bizarrely enough, it has the exact same message as The Shawshank Redemption, also by Darabont, though their respective tones could not be more diametrically opposed to one another. Never give up hope, no matter how bad things get.
>>
>>220552576
The comedic timing with which the military rocks up immediately after the grim dour miserable fakeout "ending" and Fixes Everything in 30 seconds and THEN the movie ends is honestly perfect
>>
>>220554465
>But after a couple of rewatches, I think the army arriving so quickly was part of the point.
The craziest theory I've heard about this movie is that the crazy religious lady was actually right, since she wanted to sacrifice the boy, and the horrors stop as soon as the protagonist kills his son.

This is part of what makes the ending so good. You kinda get the sense that we, the audience, missed out on a really cool action movie, one were we didn't have to deal with being trapped with obnoxious religious ladies, so we share in the protagonist's despair, as we too feel gypped. It's brilliant, really.
