Considering his vision for this Odyssey film he made the right call casting an African actress in the role.- Nolan's Odyssey is obviously not made for historical accuracy, but rather to universalise ancient Greek myth and retell a heroic epic for all of humanity. A historically accurate film always tends to become limited and quickly forgotten. Nolan clearly wants his film to transcend time and culture revitalise Greek myth in the 21st century.- Beauty is complex, multi-faceted and ethereal. Chuds who are upset about Lupita are autistic materialists who can't comprehend beauty beyond the quantifiable. In their minds Helen of Troy must be white and blonde because: 1) that's how the text describes her and 2) the popular consensus is that white and blonde is the ideal female beauty. This is the mindset of a peasant, only concerned with the immediate and the worldly. The ancient Greeks however were an aristocratic society of warrior-poets and their understanding of beauty would have been much more appreciative of the discrete and the novel. Homer's emphasis on Helen of Troy's Nordic features is matter of emphasising her novelty and unique beauty in relation to the average, contemporary Greek. When you understand this you also understand why a historical accurate casting of Helen would have fallen flat, considering what Nolan is attempting to accomplish. His choice of Lupita actually stays true to Homer and the Greek spirit in a way that no chud seems able to comprehend. Black women are not considered conventionally beautiful and that is precisely why Lupita Nyong'o embodies that novelty and sense of fascination which the ancient Greeks would have seen in a Nordic woman.
