How did Lester have a hold on Sharon stone's character. Watching pimp documentaries is perplexing why the girls dont just work alone.

its a good movie. not kino, but good. i can come back to it once or twice a year and enjoy it. its a bit sentimental for me because i remember my grandpa owning the 2-piece VHS set of it. sharon stone puts on the best performance of the starring actors i think she did a good job of portraying a hustler degenerate addicted whore. tommy's death scene is also fucking brutal

I've watched Goodfellas a million times but never seen Casino. Is it worth a watch?

he groomed her from a very young age. She acted like her Dad but also lover. She truly loved him but he manipulated her to be like this.
>>220573951
yes definitely. its much prettier as a movie and Id say funny compared to Goodfellas
>>
>>220571395
Cause the idea is the pimp protects them from people not paying or thieves through violence
>>
>>220571395
IIRC from the book the film is based on they'd been together on and off since high school and even had a daughter together. dude got his claws in early and she never shook him off
honestly the film whitewashed both of them quite a bit
>>
>>220571343
scorsese whitewashed the jew in casino. he was also unironically fbi informant that's why they didn't kill him
>>
Not a hype as watching it on HBO back when it was new. I was a little kid at the time. It was ultra kino. Watching it in 2026 it just isn't the same. It's not that the movie is bad, it's just that present times are so bad that NOTHING IS ENJOYABLE.

It's a mystery.
>>
>>220571395
How do you think a pimp reacts when a girl says no to his “offer”? Not much to stop him from forcing her to work for him. The Lester diamond character was pretty ridiculous. I’m skeptical there’s any white pimps at the street level unless they’re 1%ers.

Pimps are dangerous and extremely violent. They aren’t people you generally want to fuck with. They have to be because rival pimps will steal their girls and they have to be dangerous to keep the clients in line.
>>
>>220571343
That vice torture scene is brutal. A lot of it is brutal. Stellar acting all round. Sharon Stone really good at making you hate her
>>
>>220576358
Those are gorilla pimps and they are only a segment of them. Chappelle goes into the other type with some anecdote about iceberg slim. Two white pimps in media were the 12 monkeys one and the running scared one. Both ostentatious and scumbags.
>>
>>220573951
Yes. Pesci is even more unhinged in Casino
>>
>>220571517
If I must choose I would agree overall. Still they’re two different types of movies. Casino is a dark comedy with tons of great lines and hilarious scenes. Goodfellas obviously has great lines but it’s not a comedy. Good fellas is a gritty gangster movie. Casino is more like Donnie Brasco meets The Big Lebowski. Shitty description I know but I’m tired.

It was cruel what they did to Joe Pesci's character at the end. Of course the Shah got his revenge after goodfellas. Scorsese knew how to make a scene.

goodfellas and casino are two sides of the same coin

goodfellas is all about the style, less about the substance. you've got a goated soundtrack, quippy lines, beautiful cinematography, and lol moments.

casino is much much more dramatic, and heavily reliant on its substance. still great soundtracks and shots, and some funny lines (mainly from pesci), but less lol random moments.

it's the closest scorcese would ever come to pulling a spielberg, where he does one fun movie and one serious movie at a time.

overall both are solid 9/10s and should be in everyone's top ten gangster flicks.
>>
I always felt like this was Goodfellas-lite, but now that I'm older I realize it's actually just as good. Also, I think Don Rickles with a shotgun is one of the greatest images in cinema history.
>>
I actually slightly prefer it to Goodfellas. I think it's the Vegas aesthetic that does it for me
>>
>>220571391
It's bizarre because later in the movie they have a pretty good animatronic Joe Pesci getting buried in a corn field so they had access to some high quality body prop makers

I just don't get what make Deniro's character a cool tough guy who has the respect of Pesci and the others and is treated like a mafia bigshot. He never shows anything. He should have been more of a bean counter nerd.

Casino takes place in vegas in the 1970s, there were fewer than 150,000 people living in vegas at the time. That's why the pawn stars guy was able to get his pawn license. The old man owned like a coin shop or something and Rick was the first to file with the city when they hit some population mark that by statute created another pawn store license.
I could believe there was a white pimp in vegas in the 70s when no one lived out there and it was a high traffic zone. Prostitution wasn't banned in Vegas until 1971 and even then it was legal in the rest of the state because the law only banned it in counties with more than 200,000 people which was just the county vegas was in
