Speaking of unecessary sequels.
The plot of the oeiginal is a perfect circle, Andi is a sloppy bitch who goes into Runway with the sole intent of gaining enough experience to apply for a job in actual journalism, is quickly bullied into submission and transforms into a mini-Miranda, ruins every other facet of her life and then realizes this isn't who she wants to be when she sees Miranda betray the one person she could consider a friend so she quits but because her priorities have changed she really can't go back to just being a sloppy bitch, she self-actualizes and moves on, the end.
Making this sequel fundamentally betrays every positice message and concept in the original.

Except this never happens. It's a flaw of the original movie that they never actually commit to this idea. For example, they try to rub it in Andi's face that she took the Paris trip away from Emily ... except that Emily was hit by a fucking car, and physically couldn't go anyway (Andi was even insistent that she wouldn't go UNTIL Emily was in the hospital). The movie should have actually had Andi "steal" the Paris trip away from Emily so she would actually have something to feel bad about later. Basically every element of the movie was like this.

The sequel was fine, but it's true it was completely necessary and pretty dishonest. They had to really downplay Miranda's established personality in order to make her semi-likeable so the ending would work. The 20 year time gap and the running them about magazines being much less glamorous helps a lot ... but it's still a stretch given the original movie.
