Well, the problem with The Passion is that we don't hear Jesus preach and we don't see the good works that made him popular. Mad Mel wanted two hours of torture and nothing else.

That's understandable, Jesus really subverts the expectations of what a glorious savior would be like. It's uncomfortable to witness a great person willingly open themselves up for humiliation in that manner and then be told that this is behavior we should emulate.

The crucifixion doesn't mean much without the sermons and miracles that came before. Any criminal or rabble-rouser could be crucified in the Roman Empire. The story takes its significance from the things Jesus did prior to the cross. And Mel didn't show those things.
