now that the dust has settled, was Jennifer Melfi a good or bad psychiatrist? was Tony beyond help, or could she have helped him if she had been more competent?
>>
tony got worse over the course of the series so she obviously failed
>>
It's hard to say given Tony is such an extreme case. Most psychiatry isn't dealing with violent criminals looking to gain leverage over you at every instant.
>>
>>220579603
Tony was a sociopath and afaik there is no cure. also she did keep him as a patient purely for the thrill of having such a high profile and dangerous client.
that being said, his panic attacks got better so that speaks for her i guess
>>
>>220579603
Bad. Melfi refused to connect with Tony on a human level and always tried to maintain a professional character that acted as a block in Tony’s growth, such as when Tony started throwing money at Melfi after she let Tony know he was being charged for the session he missed. Tony was begging for Melfi to connect on a deeper level and discuss their relationship but Melfi refused, probably because she was too scared to actually connect with Tony. Hell the fact Melfi and Tony never discuss how Melfi is genuinely terrified of him also shows how much she actually held back from him, just like everyone else in his life except for Carmella and Meadow
>>
she was very enabling and fancied his patient, not great.
>>
>>220579709
Tony wanted connection on an inappropriate level. It's not for a psychiatrist to be your girlfriend or mom even if that would be best for your growth.
>>
>>220579603
She was good. AT MAKING MY PENIS HARD
>>
>>220579745
Melfi let the cash nexus draw her boundary rather than discussing boundaries person-to-person. She off-loaded it onto institutions. I’m not sure I disagree with your point though it would have been a difficult tightrope for Melfi to walk.
>>
>>220579603
At some point she rightfully considered sending him to someone specialized in CBT but never followed through
>>
>>220579812
I don't remember them ever discussing cock and ball torture
>>
>>220579623
he was a sociopath tho
>>
Therapy is a bullshit meme unless you're talking someone out of committing suicide. If you're depressed it does nothing. Livia was right about them.
>>
>>220579603
Psychiatrists don't do psychotherapy. They diagnose and prescribe pills. The talking therapy psychiatrist is Hollywood BS.
>>
>>220579603
She was very good at convincing Tony to keep paying her tens of thousands of dollars over the years while she did nothing for him. So yes she was a great psychiatrist
>>
She was bad at her job and deserved the subtle ass chewing she got from the smug bald guy psychologist.
>>
She was good at making young me want to fuck business milfs.
>>
Why didn't she just come out and just say he is a sociopath?
>>
>>220579603
There's no such thing as a good psychiatrist.
>>
>>220579603
I think she and tony were just a bad fit, she clearly crossed professional boundaries but she wouldnt have if it was anyone but Tony
>>
>>220579709
>Tony was begging for Melfi to connect on a deeper level and discuss their relationship but Melfi refused
he was begging for sex with his mother
>>
>>220581035
>keep paying her
she cut off Tony halfway into the show and only came back cause Tony begged her

What people need to realize is that the writers didn't knew shit about how real psychiatry and therapy works. Melfi was just a tool and the hook to sell the show:
>what if mob boss went to therapy lmao
It was just a narrative device to explore Tony's mind. That's it. It wouldn't work at all in real life whatsoever.

If you want to know what would really happen is Tony would be recommended a CBT (cognitive-behavioral) therapy because it's proven to work best with people like him.

Melfi would give Tony tasks and basically school homework to help him change his behavior and interpret things differently and work on his responses.
>>
>>220579603
I watched one of those "real rapist reacts to rape scenes" videos and the guy said she was shit at her job because she failed to assert her dominance as a therapist. like when they invited carmela and she started blaming her for not doing a good job and tony began defending her she were supposed to say something like "thank you tony but I can speak for mysefl" and then discuss the issue with carmela but she just kinda sat there
>>
Side note, she's probably unironically the best actress on the show because everyone just plays themselves (as is often the case with TV actors) because in real life she's a loud, vulgar, drunk slutty woman, almost complete opposite of Melfi.
>>
i'd say the character was supposed to be competent in essence
but her not handing off tony after it becomes clear she is emotionaly compromised is a massive fuck-up on her part
>>
>>220581277
She would have known that's the perfect way to hook a BPDemon
>>
>>220581305
>tony doing CBT
now there's a sight!
he would find that approach even more humiliating, i'd wager.
>>
sociopath
>>
did she have a boobjob or just got fat?
like compare her in 1979
https://cdn1.aznude.com/lorrainebracco/duossurcanape/bracco-duossur-n-8.jpg
and in sopranos
https://cdn1.aznude.com/lorrainebracco/thesopranos/Bracco-The-Sopranos_750694.jpg
>>
>>220581487
probably both, she got real fat by the end of the show
>>
>>220581487
She probably just grew into her body. What is she like 19 in the first photo?
>>
>>220579603
It took her fucking years to realize he wasn’t improving and was only becoming a bigger sociopath. Tony probably was beyond help but she was a retard for failing to understand that sooner
>>
>>220581487
That Sopranos scene with her really tickled my fancy if you know what I meant by that thing I just said before that
>>
>>220579709
>Melfi refused to connect with Tony on a human level and always tried to maintain a professional character
That's required of therapists.
>>
>>220579603
He didn't want help
>>
>>220579603
>Starting a thread like that
Kill yourself
>>
>>220581206
He's a violent criminal with a body count, obviously he's a sociopath. Telling him does nothing.
>>
It felt like the show didnt even know until the couple last episodes where they specifically say that therapy doesn't work on sociopaths
>>
>>220581800
the fact that Melfi didnt read that study is kind of an asspull imo
>>
Bad. Her knowledge was good but her behavior was unprofessional and unethical at times. And sometimes she was phoned in and just running the motions. Her final dismal of Tony was particularly poorly handled.

Those are definitely natural tits in the second pic

It's a weird power dynamic. They're supposed to be treating you, but they don't really like to tell you what they're treating you for.

It's a racket for the jews

t.man that should be on several medications
>>
>>220581305
i would bite her pussy if you know what i mean
>>
I mean it's pretty much spelled out in the show. She had a glaring blind spot for Tony's failure to improve and lack of boundaries because she was subconsciously attracted to his status as a big dangerous man

Good first tip if you want to get away with murder is to post on 4chan that you're planning it. They'll never expect you to confess to your plans, so this will throw them off the trail.

Her agreeing to continuing to see him after S1 did more harm than good.

The extent to which a therapist should put on a character of clinical detachment is debated within the practice.
>>220584858
I never said they should be friends

That makes her portrayal all the more accurate. Therapists/psychatrists don’t work and have never actually helped anyone ever. I don’t know anyone who ever went to therapy and came out a better person.

Psychology is an interesting “science” in that over 50% of studies are irreproducible. Meaning that they’re literally wrong more often than they’re right. Or, even in the best case scenario, it’s impossible to know if they’re right or not. You would actually be more correct to do the opposite of every psychological thesis than to do it. It’s like inverse Cramer.

Also, when people say “Trust the Science” on trannies, it’s all psychology research. Aka the shit that is wrong more than 50% of the time. Look up the Replication Crisis.
>>
>>220580517
The talking is the diagnosis part, you donut.
>>
>>220585387
What are you, a scientologist? Go test your tethans you freak.
>>
She should’ve helped Tony deal with his gender dysphoria. Thank god we don’t live in such a draconian era now
>>
>>220585794
Hating trannies should be instinctual, based on the most basic cognitive skills and pattern recognition, nothing else should be a factor.
>>
>>220585794
insanely pseud poster who thinks replicability crisis is a psych problem, lol, lmao even

not him, what causes replicability crisis in your opinion
>>
>>220579603
she was a "good" psychiatrist in that she had a genuine interest in treating him, but a "bad" psychiatrist in that the interest was spurred by the excitement she felt from talking to a mob boss she knew regularly hurt and extorted people

When I was little, Melfi was my favorite character because I had wanted to become a Psychiatrist. I thought the connection she made with the Gabagool smell and Tony witnessing his father chop off some butcher's fingers was brilliant.

Then I got older and realized that there was nothing scientific at all about this revelation, and that she didn't even think to give Tony an ASPD diagnosis. She is also quite unprofessional dressing the way she does just showing off her legs constantly.
>>
>Be me

>>
>>220579603
She was a manipulator.
>>
>>220585387
I know at least one boomer who made huge improvements to his anger issues and generally negative bullshit with CBT. Teaching someone to stop obsessing over negative thoughts isn't exactly rocket surgery but still, the therapist helped a lot

You're talking about someone who was already retarded to begin with and basic logic made him act better, therapy won't do anything for someone who has a more developed brain

Moving the goalpost by 50 yards at least

Are women that easy to rape? She didn't even fought back. And she had the possibility of indirectly kill her rapist why didn't she told Tony me savior soprano he was already doing evil shit why not a good deed
>>
This thread is a good example of zoomers taking over sopranos discussions.

Just barnyard animal stupidity.
>>
>>220580517
Psychiatrist is a psychologist who also prescribes shit, they're not opposed to each other, one does more than the other.
>>
>>220581305
No what would happen is that she would have Tony committed because he's a danger to himself and others.
