It wanted to simultaneously be: a grounded story about the lived experience of minorities in 1930s Jim Crow era USA and their struggles to find freedom, a movie about how music transcends time, generations, cultures and unites us all, the writers’ barely hidden nigger power fantasy fetish, b movie horror schlock complete with cartoonish gore and supposedly smart characters making retarded decisions, a gothic horror movie featuring vampires and Christianity as an allegory for white people wanting to dehumanise and erase black culture (but also featuring the KKK, just in case you didn't get the subtle undertones). And because it tried to suck so many lefty dicks simultaneously, it had zero clue how to tie any of them together, so it came off as a very condescending and confused pastiche of genres and tones.
