The show's apparently got two era's going on. One set a little bit in the past and the a plot set in the modern day.
If I had to guess, Hal will either be killed off at the end of the past plot, or is forced to go off world. Maybe this is why Guy shows up, he now on world covering as John still hasn't proven himself yet. John proves himself by the end of the modern plot, becomes a new green lantern, then both John and Guy are in Superman 2 as casting credits slate their actors for.

my take on the johns run is that credit should be given to tomasi, reis and EVS as well. they balanced having four earth lanterns with hal and john running sector 2814 and guy and kyle as part of the honour guard, introduced sector houses, sector partners, new characters like sodam yat (part of alan moore's prophecy but properly introduced here) and soranik natu, and brought back the corps (which was in the works anyway).

there were many things I disliked about the run. turning the GLC into an army, yet making them weaker than basically every rainbow lantern they faced (when the only limits to a green lantern's ring are imagination and willpower). the execution of the rainbow lanterns was fairly tacky (royalty hunting), considering cosmic DC is grossly underutilised, and the treatment of the lost lanterns like kreon, boodikka, kehaan, jack t chance, laira and more was Johns at his worst, killing of characters willy-nilly to the point that their deaths mean nothing (see also: infinite crisis)

personally, I love GL: Rebirth and everything up to sinestro corps war, as I feel that resolves the hal/kyle/sinestro arc perfectly AND pays homage to the original alan moore prophecy. I can leave the rest.

Sadly EVS got pretty much blacklisted due to his politics. Even I am taken aback a bit at how conservative he is. He was real nice when I met him, but was kinda surprised how open he was saying that a recent Obama rally he saw in town was like going to a rally in Nuremberg. Not that I disagree all that much, but it was surprisingly blunt. He also did a Sinestro sketchbook caleld "My Struggle". Bit on the nose. Surprised he lasted so long even into the 2010s. Well, his art is fantastic. Very clean classic comic art.
