How did they get the organisms eating the sun from venus to test? We can't just fly to venus.
Why did they carelessly take the sample out the lab for Goslings venus test? What if it escaped the lab? Is it harmful to earth?
Why would earth trust Gosling if he says he can't do the job and he is taken against his will? Why is he the only one? Wouldn't a volunteer that is motivated be better?
Why did his crew die but he did not?
If the micro sun organisms are super fuel, why can't they bring more fuel? Why can they send only one ship? Wouldn't this fuel revolutionize space travel?
How does gosling's method of communication with Rocky work? How does recording rocky's language help either of them understand eachother?
Why does gosling never ask important questions about Rocky's home and species? They just show us millenial humor but no attempts to share vital knowledge.
What does his civilization know? How advanced are they? What is their culture like? He selfishly talks about earth millenial things but never anything else. Why wouldn't earth send another ship to investigate the alien in the end? Why is the old Grey haired lady in charge of earth? Where is the military? Once they save the sun, Wouldn't the existence of another civilization in space be a concern?
How do they know the micro organism predators will survive on venus?
How can he have fuel to send a bunch of pods but not make the journey himself? How can those pods travel the distance? How can they trust the pods?
Why does Rocky build gosling a biodome but not something for himself?
How does Rocky reproduce without his mate?

>How did they get the organisms eating the sun from venus to test? We can't just fly to venus.
the soviets flew to venus decades ago
>Why did they carelessly take the sample out the lab for Goslings venus test? What if it escaped the lab? Is it harmful to earth?
hed already done tests by that point
>Why would earth trust Gosling if he says he can't do the job and he is taken against his will? Why is he the only one? Wouldn't a volunteer that is motivated be better?
they had no time to train a replacement without missing their launch window
>Why did his crew die but he did not?
the coma technology wasnt tested much. goose got lucky
>If the micro sun organisms are super fuel, why can't they bring more fuel? Why can they send only one ship? Wouldn't this fuel revolutionize space travel?
they only have time to make enough fuel for a one way trip
>How does gosling's method of communication with Rocky work? How does recording rocky's language help either of them understand eachother?
rockys sounds are consistent. all goose needs to do is identify the sound rocky makes to identify an object and go from there
>Why does gosling never ask important questions about Rocky's home and species? They just show us millenial humor but no attempts to share vital knowledge.
yeah this one is kind of a shame. probably happens off camera i guess
>What does his civilization know? How advanced are they? What is their culture like? He selfishly talks about earth millenial things but never anything else.
theyre more advanced than earth in some ways but dont understand radiation. also, in the book, they dont understand relativity

>Why wouldn't earth send another ship to investigate the alien in the end? Why is the old Grey haired lady in charge of earth? Where is the military? Once they save the sun, Wouldn't the existence of another civilization in space be a concern?
the story is over by that point. we have no idea what they did next because the credits rolled and i left the cinema
>How do they know the micro organism predators will survive on venus?
they explicitly bred them to do that
>How can he have fuel to send a bunch of pods but not make the journey himself? How can those pods travel the distance? How can they trust the pods?
probe is small. ship is big. big thing need more fuel
>Why does Rocky build gosling a biodome but not something for himself?
we dont see where rocky lives?
>How does Rocky reproduce without his mate?
that doesnt happen?

the overwhelming majority of these are explicitly addressed in the film. look up from tiktok, zoomzoom

This annoyed me too. They did almost a weird cinematic sleight of hand. You have them agreeing what numbers are and Rocky counting from 1 to 12 then right away he is already saying normal words but they didn't elaborate how they got from numbers to words, it just happened

>How did they get the organisms eating the sun from venus to test? We can't just fly to venus.
Flying to Venus is not a problem we just have no reason to go.
>Why did they carelessly take the sample out the lab for Goslings venus test? What if it escaped the lab? Is it harmful to earth?
Considering its traveled thru space and only eats the sun they'll be fine. They clearly knew a lot more about it than gosling at that point.
>Why would earth trust Gosling if he says he can't do the job and he is taken against his will? Why is he the only one? Wouldn't a volunteer that is motivated be better?
Movie wouldn't happen and he's "the most knowledgeable about astrophage"
>Why did his crew die but he did not?
Malfunction on ship
>If the micro sun organisms are super fuel, why can't they bring more fuel? Why can they send only one ship? Wouldn't this fuel revolutionize space travel?
Weight? Probably faster to send them out to save earth as fast as possible without more fuel slowing trip down. We're talking 7 billion ppl vs 3
>How does gosling's method of communication with Rocky work? How does recording rocky's language help either of them understand eachother?
I agree they pass over what would probably be the most interesting part of first contact.
>Why does gosling never ask important questions about Rocky's home and species? They just show us millenial humor but no attempts to share vital knowledge.
It's not important to the dillema at hand.
>What does his civilization know? How advanced are they? What is their culture like? He selfishly talks about earth millenial things but never anything else. Why wouldn't earth send another ship to investigate the alien in the end? Why is the old Grey haired lady in charge of earth? Where is the military? Pods are 1000x smaller than the ship. They sent 5 as a resundancy

It absolutely does not

>>
>>220585263
You just quoted the process. You left out the part about the software he used to record the frequencies - some program from the 90s. He had all human knowledge in his ship - all literature, music, entertainment, and software ever written. That is why rocky was so excited to get the laptop.
>>
>>220585263
It's basically a handwave because otherwise the story doesn't happen. In reality yes translating an alien language would be one of the most difficult tasks humanity has ever undertaken because you can't count on basic shared fundamental concepts. But the story would be very boring if it was just them unable to understand one another you need dialogue.

you can develop a shared language using math. an alien can recognise 2, 2, and 4, and deduce easily that the symbols between the numbers mean "and" and "equal". From there you can move onto sets and logic and get words for concepts like "not", "or", "includes" "excludes" and so on. Couple that with the fact Rocky uses sound to communicate, and can perceive solid objects, and it's a slam dunk
>>
>>220585001

>>
>>220585612
>can't count on basic shared fundamental concepts
[citation needed]. As a polyglot chad I believe if we share the concept of using symbols with specific meanings then it wouldn't be that hard. It's weirder that they don't have AI in the universe and the ship's computer is extremely stupid even by today's standards. Is Weir an anti-ai chud?
>>
>>220582732
The short answer is: Andy Weir is not a scientist, he is a computer programmer with a knowledge base frozen in time from 20 years ago. The most technically correct thing about the movie was Gosling using an array of alien noise recordings assigned to English words to be spoken with by an voice translator; something that could be feasibly vibe coded in a few weeks with 2030's AI tools. The rest is baloney.
>>
>>220586574

>>220582068
I was recently rereading the book again and I realised how Gosling gives Rocky's people a massive advantage over Earth by handing over the ship's entire library over to them, that's pretty much the biggest fuck-you he can give to Strass or whatever her name was since it was her idea in the first place.

>>220582732
most of these questions are answered in the book.
>>
>>220587314
People go into comas and come out after months, years even decades and recover
Basically the cold is added to slow down chemical reactions in your body meaning aging is slowed. It’s not that far off. If we ever go for beyond mars we will use it more and more might even use it for mars. Just put people in conas for a couple of weeks in rotations
>>
>>220587314
How do you know that if they didnt test on people?
>>

Btw usually it’s 3 days are extremely safe under the right circumstances and 14 is pushing it but with enough resources it’s doable. Currently.

So there you go

The question nobody asks, how does an organism that's 95÷% water exist on the surface of the sun, if it was backed off of the sun some miles and acted almost like a solar panel while golfing the star It would make more sense but no it actually eats the star from the surface which makes no fucking sense!
>>
>>220587849
It's in the book. It doesn't eat the sun. It harvests the energy in the photons storing it with some quantum mechanism. Less energy through photons is getting to earth.

It instantly reminded me of a horse or sheep and how they stomp their foot when they're mad, it's the little things that made me fall in love with Rocky. He's a very fun character and then I remembered he's a real "sapient" with proper courage and loyalty when he got crispy saving Grace.
>>

>>
>>220587314
Yes, in the book there's the idea that 1 in 7000 humans have a coma resistance gene. Quote from Grace when he finds out:
>“This seems like a dream come true. Like suspended animation in sci-fi novels.
>>
>>220588284
So what you're saying is, Grace needs to go back to Earth and get milked for an extraterrestrial breeding program.
>>
>>220587849
It’s based off chemosynthesic organisms but uses photosynthesis instead. Meaning it harvests energy and converts it to mass but uses some to get around which happens.

Most likely there is weird shit like this already in our own solar system. For instance there is more life below 100 meters to 200 meters the surface of the earth than on the entire surface and air. In that 100 meters probably 10 times more life at very least. Compared to below the surface of the planet we live on a barren surface with giant mediums of water and air. Life down there is literally stacked on each other.
>>220588284
That’s.. probably real. Some people in some gene lines can go years in weeks and months even years then survive. It’s crazy
>>
>>220588323
>For instance there is more life below 100 meters to 200 meters the surface of the earth than on the entire surface and air. In that 100 meters probably 10 times more life at very least

how the fuck did they colonize the entire galaxy before we noticed in like a decade?

>>220588861
When they travel between a planet and the sun for breeding sometimes they miss, 99% of the time they just die. Sometimes they get into the neighboring system with a viable planet and they start breeding there. repeat over and over until they web across the galaxy
do remember they weigh almost nothing and produce metric fuck tons of propulsion, they can get far very fast

Venus is imho easier to terraform we have the life forms here already to do it but they exist at the bottom of the ocean. You just drop them there and let them gradually eat up the atmosphere and drop off silica etc so the clouds of turn into a shiny metal ball which starts dropping heat off. Papers have been written about it. The entire volcanatr surface would be buried under miles of highly reflective oceans of metal dropping more heat and giving you a proper rotation. Right now the planet rotates to slow doing this gives you a magnetic field two metals going the opposite way etc blah blah projecting from sun etc energy dropping more heat. It would be biological life to do it. The upper atmosphere of Venus is already earth like for 50-90 miles there you go. I read this nonsense constantly but mars you’d have to deprbit the moons with paint which would heat up the ice they have which leads to sublimation meaning propulsion and breaking them up. Also papers

1. Just because Grace is smart doesn't mean his hypothesis can't be wrong.
2. A lot of stuff happens off screen in the movie, like them discussing all sort of scientific details. The movie cuts these parts because it focuses on the emotional impact of their friendship

>>

it evolved incredibly fast because it was rapidly bred and culled over and over to force it to evolve quickly
its evolutionary pressure was to avoid the nitrogen that kills it
the solutions are A, develop a tolerance to higher % of nitrogen and B, Worm your way into the crystal structure of xenonite to avoid the nitrogen
Grace was breeding for A but obviously B also evolved
we do similar shit with bacteria irl and its why every few years the newscycle cries about antibacterial resistance

>>220590075
Anon, I think you are really underestimating just how deep the science in the book goes.
If they tried to explain everything, it would turn the movie into a boring slog. I thought they were quiet ballsy to go with the 'show, don't tell approach' leaving the scientific details in the movie without explaining them.

Two examples:
>tau ceti is 10 light years from earth, grace casually mentions that the trip home will take him four years, without mentioning the concept of relativity
>when looking for rockys ship, is repeatedly firing the spin drive, looking for the reflection of blip-a in petrova frequency.

You said the rock's planet receives no direct sunlight but the Sun's strength waning is a major problem because they need the Sun because of its supposed unknown role as an external heat source that's needed for an unknown reason, without them receiving direct sunlight there would be no complex life on a planet, if they can survive with the Sun merely acting as a low emitting heat source I doubt it going down 30% would impact them much at all especially given they can create their own environment with bio domes
>>
>>220590393
rocky is actually a DEI hire himself
>>
>>220590361
1. No complex life exists without direct sunlight, their existence is impossible
2. They have the ability to create artificial environments, I don't think that their Sun losing 30% of its strength would be catastrophic at all
>>
>>220590406
>If sunlight didn't reach the surface of their planet then why the fuck would their Sun 'dying' be of any consequence to them?
This is what you asked.
The surface of a planet is defined as the hard ground beneath the atmosphere. No light reaches this. And yet sunlight still reaches the planet's upper atmosphere.
Slide my cock into the back of your throat.

>1. No complex life exists without direct sunlight, their existence is impossible
This is quite retarded, and early life on Earth was almost certainly chemolithoautotrophic, and there is no reason that complex, even sentient life, cannot exist without photosynthesis. That is just heterotroph chauvinism.
See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_chauvinism

>b-b-but not complex!
If life can arise, and there is enough energy, complex life can very conceivably evolve without sunlight. You just need trophic levels and sufficient energy, and this can come from everything from high pressure to tidal heating.

>How did they get the organisms eating the sun from venus to test? We can't just fly to venus.
Don't remember this from the book. Haven't seen the movie.
>Why did they carelessly take the sample out the lab for Goslings venus test?
It got out. It is nothing life Earth life so existing containment protocols were not adequate.
>What if it escaped the lab?
In the book it did IIRC.
>Is it harmful to earth?
Not unless the Earth become a star, no
>Why would earth trust Gosling if he says he can't do the job and he is taken against his will? Why is he the only one? Wouldn't a volunteer that is motivated be better?
He was very well-versed in Astrophage and made many intuitive leaps no one else did. If you have a magic drug that makes you forget your cowardice, it is not a terrible move.
>Why did his crew die but he did not?
Random chance. Technology was too new to be reliable.
>If the micro sun organisms are super fuel, why can't they bring more fuel?
Take time to grow, and it needs energy to grow. In the book they had to basically destroy the entire Sahara to make enough solar power to grow Astrophage just enough to get to Erid.
Remember: Erid is so high pressure and hot that they can make it on that planet with much, much less effort.
>Why can they send only one ship?
Because they had to turn the entire Sahara into one giant solar plant in the books. The entire globe contributed.
>Wouldn't this fuel revolutionize space travel?
Yes, given sufficient time. In the book it is theorized to be a space fuel.

>How does gosling's method of communication with Rocky work?
It's an AI program, using machine learning.
>How does recording rocky's language help either of them understand each other?
This is one of the weakest parts of the book, but it is not impossible. A far-future implementation would work on the same principles. It's just the computing power and it is doubtful that we would be able to guess extraterrestrial life's language even then. How do you interpret an alien that communicates with colors, or silences, or chemical emissions/smells a trillion times more complex than what we can sense? The processing power needed would scale exponentially.
>Why does gosling never ask important questions about Rocky's home and species?
He does in the book.
>They just show us millenial humor but no attempts to share vital knowledge.
IDK what that means, and I turn 38 in 8 days.
>What does his civilization know?
They only recently got into space when their sun started dimming, IIRC.
>How advanced are they?
Advanced but slightly less adventurous than humans. They only recently got into orbit, and only because they knew something was wrong.
They do not know anything about radiation, since Rocky's crew died from radiation poisoning. something no advanced species could fail to understand while also achieving space flight.
They also can make strong materials out of xenon (something we cannot do).

>What is their culture like? He selfishly talks about earth millenial things but never anything else.
Not as much mentioned in the book. The "I sleep, you watch" thing is kind of a big deal for them. Also eating is fucking gross and they treat it as a shameful, private affair like we do shitting.
>Why wouldn't earth send another ship to investigate the alien in the end?
Gosling (now on Erid) only finds out about the signal in the epilogue of the book. So maybe Earth did, but they only just found out because our Sun in their sky is no longer dimming. So since we can't travel at anywhere close to light speed, there is no way Earth finds out about Rocky until the epilogue, much less send a new ship.
>Why is the old Grey haired lady in charge of earth?
Why is anyone chosen for any position? She was the right woman for the job.
>Where is the military?
It's an administration job. If they need to kill something, the soldiers are always available. But this was an international collaboration to save the world. It was first and foremost an economic endeavor, followed by a scientific expedition. No need for military; not the right tool for the job. Even astronauts in the US work for NASA, not the Air Force (although most have USAF or Navy backgrounds).
>Once they save the sun, Wouldn't the existence of another civilization in space be a concern?
Again, the primary protag sends the info and then goes to Erid. It takes many years to get to earth, and many more years to get a response. In the book we only find out that Earth is saved in the epilogue, and only because news of our now-fixed Sun travels at the speed of light.
>How do they know the micro organism predators will survive on venus?
I'm guessing this is from the movie only, not the book.
>>

>How can he have fuel to send a bunch of pods but not make the journey himself?
The pods are communication only, no life support. That way you can have more of them.
>How can those pods travel the distance?
Astrophage + no bulky human life support stuff.
>How can they trust the pods?
It is the only choice they have.
>Why does Rocky build gosling a biodome but not something for himself?
In the book, the protag can use a space suit, while Rocky literally has super hot ammonia as his breathing; he would literally melt the protag and his suit instantly.
>How does Rocky reproduce without his mate?

Reminder that racemixing almost cost them the mission. They're supposed to have two teams with 3 people each (1 captain 1 engineer 1 scientist), but scientist A and scientist B started fucking each other (picrel). When the black science guy was doing the experiment that exploded, the white science girl was """assisting""" him (book explicitly states that they like to do quickies whenever they have time).

So racemixing nearly doomed humanity and a white man had to clean up their mess and save the day. It's a very based movie.

I mean, think about it. we don't even have anything that translates that well between languages on Earth with Earth languages.
If you say we do, then it 100% confirms that you don't speak another language.
You might be able to get very basic things the way you described it, you are correct the way you explained that. But they were using concepts like "could" and "would".
A lot of languages do not have 1 to 1 concepts for the same thoughts, expressions, or phrases so deciphering that would be nearly impossible for a rock person, a human and a dumb computer

They were gonna lose 3.5 billion people in 20 years simply due to crop failures, and they could barely produce enough fuel for the Hail Mary. Producing the 2 million kgs of fuel needed is already an insanely huge effort in the book; they had to pave the Saharan desert to create an astrophage solar farm. Reworking the entire world's energy infrastructure to rely on astrophage in a matter of years is impossible.

Also the Hail Mary has to launch as soon as possible. Remember that it takes 12 years to go to Tau Ceti and another 12 years back. Even with the project succeeding like in the movie, there will already be billions dead.

I like they we have different levels of knowledge. Makes you wonder if there are aliens out there, what they know that we don't, and what we would know that they don't.
Would be cool to trade information between species.

I read the book awhile before I watched the movie and I was pretty drunk during the movie. There's some sequences of events I can't remember from either...

After they split up and start going to their home planets, how did grace figure out that the organism can escape the containment vessel, but it didn't eat all of his fuel and he had enough to go find rocky?

After he found rocky did he transfer fuel to him? Or did rocky come onto his ship and they took that back to Rocky's world?

And did I remember correctly from the book where when grace comes back rocky is like "yo what's up? Why are you here? I called my home world and I'm just waiting for a ship they're sending"
>>
>>220596303
Martian dialogue was way too cringe. I am glad they toned it down and found a better balance with this one.
>>
>>220596942
>how did grace figure out that the organism can escape the containment vessel, but it didn't eat all of his fuel and he had enough to go find rocky?
the containers they were breeding it in had been built by rocky, and as such were made of the same material rocky made everything out of, including his ship. grace found that the organism had eaten through the breeding containers and was able to capture it into different containers in time to prevent it eating all the fuel

It isn't s-supposed to b-be?!
>>
>>220596930
>How did it happen in the book?
In the book Grace is basically the only person on the planet capable of surviving the journey and doing the scientific problem solving when he arrives, because he has the coma resistance gene.
So it's not "there's no time to train a replacement", it's more that there literally is no replacement

yes. But the movie is not about that. Astrophage is simply a plot device necessary to make relativistic travel possible with todays tech.
Realistically speaking, humans could simply farm petrova line and trivially solve the cooling issue

This movie is a live action cartoon on purpose and it's funny to see people try to dissect it. Might as well ask how wile e coyote survived falling off a cliff so many times.

It makes no sense. I tried to watch this movie with my dad who is a retired Astrophysicist and Astronomer and he tore the movie apart beginning with the line "Amateur Radio Astronomer discovered a UV band" and going from there.
>>
>>220597347
OK, so there is something inherent about him.
What about the other two who died? Did they die because they didn't have the gene, or they had a greater chance of dying?

The fact that it was water based and lived near to the sun made him check out almost immediately.
Additionally the lack of any actual propulsion apparatus in the astrophage was irritating. How did they fling themselves across the room? Or interstellar distances?
There are a bunch more but that stupid copypasta ruined my enthusiasm for typing out lists of errors.
>>
>>220582732
>How did they get the organisms eating the sun from venus to test? We can't just fly to venus.
They launched a probe that passed through the petrova line. It might have been the same probe that took the spooky images of black dots obscuring the sun. Don't remember doesn't really matter. We're pretty good at firing probes around our solar system.

This movie is really really dumb. It feels like a Tropic Thunder parody trailer movie. The fact that Gooseling was Neil Armstrong kills me. Also his bogged face doesnt help and the fact he changes clothes and wears make up IN FUCKING SPACE.
This movie sucks and it's rock chungus wholesale goyslop.
