He has no competition, several steps ahead of the second best composer.
>>
right place right time. sure he's good but most people like him would have gotten the same esteem if he hadn't been there

Agreed. Across the Stars is still his best work imo

You have many composers for big movies, but they just do "the soundtrack of X". No one is as consistent as JW to make "X's song".
>>220588139
For example, everyone loves Interstellar soundtrack, but that's just... Interstellar soundtrack. Zigger doesn't have an "Indiana Jones' song" or "Star Wars song". It's not about how good the soundtrack is to hear on a vacuum, but how iconic is.

I love the ways he always incorporates motifs for every important character, so you always know what's happening based on his music alone.

Zimmbro aka Pirates theme, aka Batman theme, aka Game of Thrones theme(Ramin only wrote the other songs, the theme is Zimmer) Lion King, Inception. If anything, Zimmer suffers from being recognised for iconic themes that everyone hums and mumbles all the time, while he is forgotten for the underlying background songs in movies. John Williams is amazing but he has the Hedwig theme, Indy and Star Wars. No one remembers him for the color purple or Schindler's list and that are basically all his good movies. Zimmer more or less even made the Nolan movies good, because let's be honest, they don't have much of a plot and are more of a canvas for his music.
>>
He's the only living musician that will have their music played 500 years from now.
>>
Bernard Herrmann
Jerry Goldsmith
Ennio Morricone
Thomas Newman
John Barry
Max Steiner
Howard Shore

John Williams has just more iconic stuff, but I think all those composers are just as good.
>>
>>220589107
>No one remembers him for the color purple
Yeah that's because Quincy Jones composed that
>>
>>220589158

A retard who has never seen any movies would say that.
Rozsa, Korngold, Herrmann, Waxman, Steiner absolutely mog him.

Had to confirm people actually read my long post.
>>
>>220589107
John Williams has multiple recognizable songs from Star Wars (main theme, binary sunset, imperial march, duel of fates), plus Hedwig, plus Indy, plus Jaws, plus Jurassic Park, plus E.T., plus Home Alone, plus Superman, plus Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Jaws theme is literally 4 notes less than Interstellar. They are both their respective slop themes. Good, yes, but if you look at it, they aren't masterpieces or worthy of recognition for the work.

I'm not going to be a contrarian here. John Williams is the GOAT. Hans Zimmer has a ton of great stuff too. I'd like to to give Clint Mansell and honorable mention. Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain are two movies carried by the god tier music.
>>
>>220589663
He does a lot of heavy lifting for Sunshine also, I think.
>>
>>220589663
If you love Aronofsky style music and vibe you'll love Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas soundtrack

>>220589663
If we're doing honorable mentions I think Giacchino deserves one as well. He did Up and Incredibles among many others. His best work is in video games though so it's up to anons if they want to give him credit as a /tv/ composer. I'm more so giving him credit as a composer in general. That MoH Frontline soundtrack is an all time, all time great.
>>
>>220589158
Not one is even close to Miklos Rozsa. /tv/ has surface level of film music awareness.
>>
>>220589776
His music for Werewolf at Night was good. It aas his passion project too.
>>
>>220589464
If "soundtrack fans" ever listened to classical music they would realize that 90 percent of Williams music is lifted from other composers and changed just enough to not be called a complete ripoff.
>>
>>220588038
John Williams>Alan Silvestri>Hans Zimmer (he did the fucking Critic theme)>James Horner>Howard Shore>Danny Elfman>Bear McCreary
>>
Miklos Rozsa is the most important movie composer of all time and hacks like Williams and Zimmer will eternally live in his shadow copyimg his works. Especially Williams who tries to recreate Ben Hur for his entire life.
>>
>>220589464
The whole Star Wars soundtrack is just Korngold, Holst, Tchaikovskiy, Dvořák, Stravinsky and Chopin mixed together.
>>
>>220588038
Morricone wipes the floor with him.
>>220588090
Ifukube too.
>>
>>220588766
As if that couldn't be said of williams. almost half the music in the prequels and harry potter sound exactly the same
>>
>>220588038
Not only do a lot of his scores sound the same, like Leia's theme and Marian's theme, but sometimes you can tell exactly which classical tune he stole the song from. When Jar-Jar is swimming toward Gunga City it's the Aquarium song from the 1800's.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVpl-RNzdE4
Darth Vader's theme is obviously the funeral song.

Herrmann takes it. North By Northwest, Vertigo, Marnie, Taxi Driver, Sisters cmon now.
>>
>>220588139
Zimmer's Batman theme is unironically trash and so is Nolan. So what else does Zimmer have?

>>220590116
Dune? It's shit but at least it has the mass appeal.

The single best thing that John Williams ever did was the final suite for E.T. I can understand not liking the ugly alien meme puppet, but everything else about the movie is so good that it's sad that /tv/ and other younger people don't seem to care for it.

Hisaishi and Zimmer are obvious competition contemporarily but his overall career is tough to surmount. Ennio morricone has some heavy hitters in terms of purely iconic, instantly recognizable songs that rival Star Wars.

>>220588766
>>220590116
Zimmer’s work on gladiator, the last samurai, even lion king is absolutely fantastic. Im not the biggest Nolan guy but his scores for those films are pretty great too.
>>
>>220591100
Given this is /tv/ I assume OP meant film score composition. Of course Williams Star Wars scores owe everything to holst even if he doesn’t like to admit it.

Here we are, Director Lucas! "Star Wars"!

-Hm, yes. You know John, this first piece is quite similar to the opening movement of Holst's "Planets".
-D'HO-HO-HO, NO, patented Williams-opuses! Old family modalities! Signature Williams leitmotif, MM-MM, it's GOOD!
